Johnson takes action against illegal auto repair shop in Saginaw
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced on Feb. 4 that her office has issued a cease and desist order against Discount Muffler & Brakes of Saginaw due to the unlawful operation of the facility without proper registration.
K & Q Automotive, which has done business as Discount Muffler & Brakes at 2714 Bay Road in Saginaw, is alleged to have continued to perform repair work for customers after the facility’s registration with the state expired on March 12, 2012.
Consumers who have a complaint against Discount Muffler & Brakes are encouraged to call the Department of State Information Center at (888) SOS-MICH (767-6424). Under Michigan law, a customer is entitled to recover any amount paid to an unregistered facility for the repair of a motor vehicle belonging to that customer.
“Repair facilities must comply with the law,” Johnson said. “If they do not, we will take action to bring them into compliance to protect consumers.”
Johnson encouraged consumers to always verify the repair shop they are using is registered with the state and licensed to perform the type of automotive work they need done. As part of her focus on strengthening her office’s consumer protection efforts, Johnson created the Office of Investigative Services, which investigates and inspects automotive-related businesses. After receiving a consumer complaint against K & Q Automotive, staff investigated, leading to the cease and desist order.
The cease and desist order prohibits K & Q Automotive from performing any further automotive repairs at the Discount Muffler & Brakes facility. State law provides that any person who knowingly provides automotive repair services without a registration or certificate is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail or a fine of up to $1,000, or both.
During Black History Month in February, the Michigan Department of State takes time to recognize the many contributions of African-Americans to our state and nation.
MDOS employees are proud to carry on the legacy of one such great individual who broke through many barriers during his life: Richard H. Austin.
Austin was the first African-American certified public accountant in Michigan and became the nation’s first African-American secretary of state. He was our longest-serving secretary of state—reelected five times—and was a national leader in traffic safety and election reform. His achievements will continue to inspire others for generations to come.
