SOS wins in court to get crucial code to maintain ExpressSOS.com

The state of Michigan has successfully argued in court to have HP Enterprise Services turn over a computer source code to the state of Michigan.

The ruling addressed the state’s request for an injunction to force HP to provide the code necessary to maintain and manage its ExpressSOS website, which is used by millions of Michigan residents. The larger lawsuit brought by the state for breach of the contract continues to move through the court system.

The state of Michigan terminated its contract with HP for cause in August, and subsequently sued HP in September after the company failed to deliver on a $49 million contract. Michigan becomes the sixth state motor vehicle agency that no longer works with the company, according to media reports.

The state’s focus now is to create a smooth transition away from HP, implement the requirements of the new road funding law and seek a qualified vendor to replace HP.

Operation CARE: Live to eat leftovers

The Michigan State Police fires up Operation C.A.R.E. from Nov. 25-29 “so everyone this Thanksgiving can live to eat the leftovers,” said Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, head of the Michigan State Police.

Troopers will conduct high-visibility enforcement focusing on impaired driving, seat belt use, careless driving and speeding.

New this year, the MSP has partnered with the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association to distribute drink coasters with the tag line, "Safety is Your Best Defense" to their member bars and restaurants. This partnership is an added push to encourage responsible driving, given that the night before Thanksgiving is a popular one to frequent bars.

Presidential primary

SOS announces presidential primary candidates

The Michigan Department of State has released the 2016 presidential primary candidate list.

Under state law, the department is required to create a list of primary election candidates “generally advocated by the national news media to be potential presidential candidates” for the Republican and Democratic parties.

The chairs of the Michigan Democratic and Republican parties had until 4 p.m., Nov. 17, to add names of other candidates to the candidate list for their party. Neither party added to the list.

A candidate on the list who wishes to withdraw has until 4 p.m., Dec. 11, to notify the department that he or she is not a presidential candidate.

Candidates not placed on the list by the department or the party chairs may collect signatures to be placed on the ballot.

The Michigan presidential primary will be March 8, 2016.

Voters will be able to view their March 8 sample ballot online at www.Michigan.gov/vote closer to Election Day to review any other elections occurring that day.
