Timesaving technology arrives in Kzoo

Just as many restaurants offer wait-list apps that alert you when your table is ready, the Secretary of State’s Kalamazoo County PLUS Office allows you to reserve a spot via the Internet or by phone, saving you time.

Customers now can schedule appointments and get in line from a home computer, with a phone call or via text message, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced on July 30.

The office at 3298 Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo is the 11th in the state to offer the innovative customer-service technology called MI-TIME Line. By September’s end, 18 of the busiest Secretary of State offices will offer the service.

MI-TIME Line will call or send a text message when the customer’s turn is coming at the counter, allowing them to avoid having to sit in the office.

“MI-TIME Line has revolutionized the waiting experience for Secretary of State customers,” Johnson said. “Get in line online and then do what you want to do. We’ll contact you when it’s almost your turn at the counter.”

Protecting voters, consumers

Secretary Johnson recently announced actions taken to protect voters and consumers in Michigan from fraudulent activities.

On July 30, Johnson and Attorney General Bill Schuette announced the conviction of Adam Kane Easlick, 35, of Ypsilanti, on one felony count of voting in a place where he was not a resident, a crime punishable by up to four years in prison.

Easlick, who had been registered at multiple addresses that were not his place of residence, pleaded guilty in Tuscola County Circuit Court and received six months probation.

stop fraud

On August 5, Johnson announced that the Department of State has summarily suspended the licenses of two Alpena used vehicle and auto parts dealers as a result of a joint investigation with the Michigan State Police Alpena Post.

The inspections were the result of tips that illegal activity was taking place at N&S Auto and Lees Auto Parts. They were issued summary suspensions July 27 that effectively shut them down until they can demonstrate compliance with Michigan law.

The dealers did not comply with requirements to provide records for inspection and maintain properly assigned titles, a major component parts log and a police book logging vehicle purchases and sales.

Johnson honors West Bloomfield couple

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson awarded Alicia and Michael Stillman of West Bloomfield with a Shining Star Award on July 29 for their work promoting organ, tissue and eye donation.

“The Stillmans went through the most tragic of circumstances – losing a child,” Johnson said. “Through donation, however, the generosity of their daughter saved five lives and enhanced many others. Her family has promoted donation since that day.”

Time to replace election equipment

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced on July 30 that Michigan has taken the first steps toward replacing the more than 10-year-old election equipment used in each of the state’s 4,800 voting precincts.

The state now is seeking proposals from election equipment vendors who offer upgraded voting systems that use a paper ballot. Proposals are due by early September.
