Voting Rights Act - 50th Anniversary
This week
marks the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This
was hard fought legislation that likely would never have seen the light of day
but for a few critical events: Lyndon Johnson’s landslide election in 1964
shortly after President Kennedy’s assassination and TV footage showing America
the violent side of the Jim Crow racial caste system prevalent in the South. The Voting
Rights Act is one of the most effective enactments by our Federal government;
