Internship Program Development Training for Agribusiness and Manufacturing Employers

Amy Cell

About the Internship Program Development Training for Agribusiness and Manufacturing Employers:

• How can Michigan stop the outsourcing of
our young and talented individuals?
• How can your business play a part in the
cultivation of fundamental workforce skills and
attitudes for the next generation of workers?
• As your workforce begins to retire, who will replace
them?
• Tried interns in the past but didn’t get the results
you were looking for?

Amanda Dumond, director of talent initiatives at Prima
Civitas, shares her experience on the topic of hosting
high-quality internship programs and explains how this
opportunity can benefit your business, as well as your
community.

By the end of the program, you will have everything you
need to begin hosting an internship, or to tune-up an
existing internship program. You’ll have the tools to give
local students hands-on experiences and prepare them
for future careers in agribusiness or manufacturing.

Tapping into Southwest Michigan’s talent pool is easy;
join us on September 17th and talk directly with
internship coordinators from southwest Michigan’s
colleges and universities as well as workforce and
economic development leaders who can help you
explore the potential impact of internships on your to-do
list and your bottom line.

RSVP by Friday, September 12:

Ryan Soucy, 269.925.1137, ext. 1513, soucyr@swmpc.org

Community Ventures Brings Together Employers and Unemployed Job Seekers

CV1

The Community Ventures (CV) team within Talent Enhancement at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) in collaboration with Wayne State University and Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses held a business outreach event in hopes of educating and attracting employers to the program, along with encouraging networking among businesses.

Alana Assenmacher from the Community Ventures team tells us more about the importance of the program to the four communities it serves.

More than 100 attendees, including current Community Ventures partner companies, participants, as well as prospective business owners and entrepreneurs gathered NextEnergy in Detroit to learn more about the program.

Community Ventures provides incentives to both employers and employees, focusing on reaching out to individuals in four high-crime urban areas (Detroit, Flint, Pontiac and Saginaw) who are structurally unemployed. Many candidates have been unemployed for a year or more, having physical or personal barriers, are ex-offenders, lack education or literacy, or are at-risk youth.
The employers hire these individuals for a full-time position while local service providers, compensated by the MEDC, provide supportive services to maintain employee retention and promote growth to their employees, both professionally and personally. The employers are also compensated in a $5,000 reimbursement for each job filled, paid in monthly installments.

At the event,  Pamela Moore, president and CEO of Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation; Michael Guthrie, president and CEO of Detroit Chassis and  Camille Banks, executive director of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses – who all participate in the program – spoke about the benefits of CV to the community. Michael Finney, president and CEO of the MEDC was the keynote speaker.

“We think of Community Ventures as offering some of the best incentives to businesses,” said Moore, who works with Michigan Works! agencies to successfully bring companies and talent together.

The event focused on success stories, one of which was of a Detroit Chassis employee Dwight Picketts. Picketts was hired and quickly promoted through the company by his strong work ethic after being recently released from parole. He worked side by side with job coaches and supportive services throughout his entire work experience that helped him get to where he is today. “The counselors and all the employees, they have a real sincere interest in helping you find employment,” said Picketts.

Since its inception two years ago, 2,254 job seekers have been placed at Michigan companies in the main target cities of Flint, Saginaw, Pontiac, and Detroit.

Community Ventures hopes to expand its network of companies, and its partnership with Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses is a prospective effort. “We’re not just talking about renewing Detroit but we are actually moving Detroit forward, in a collaborative way,” said Banks.

Detroit City Council Member Saunteel Jenkins who attended the event, was excited to learn more about CV and what it could do for the area. “If we don’t have businesses—small, medium size, and large—who are employing people and empowering families, then Detroit’s true resurgence will never happen.”

If you are a job-seeker, please contact your local Michigan Works! office for assistance in your search.
