A Match Made in Detroit

Detroit PMBC

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation is becoming known for matchmaking – and we mean business.

Last month, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Detroit Regional Chamber brought together the Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Company and General Motors to host the Detroit Three Matchmaking Summit, a Pure Michigan Business Connect supplier summit at Cobo Center in Detroit. The event introduced the three automakers and 47 Tier 1 suppliers to Michigan vendors from across the state for pre-arranged, exclusive purchaser-supplier matchmaking engagements in an effort to spur economic and job growth in the state.

It was the largest Pure Michigan Business Connect summit to date with more than 1,000 participants from 600 companies attending 900 meetings during the day.

“This matchmaking summit gives Michigan companies opportunities with the Detroit automakers and their key suppliers that they might not otherwise have,” said MEDC President and CEO Michael A. Finney. “We encourage all of Michigan’s business community, companies that have supply needs and those that are looking for new opportunities, to join Pure Michigan Business Connect.”

The event kicked off with a panel discussion among purchasing and supply chain representatives from the automakers. There, they gave vendors tips on how to best work with the Detroit Three. Gov. Rick Snyder and Nigel Francis, MEDC automotive office senior vice president and state of Michigan auto adviser, also addressed the group.

“This summit also provided opportunities to promote the Detroit Three’s commitment to supplier diversity,” said Trevor Pawl, managing director of Pure Michigan Business Connect. “The Michigan automotive supply base is not only one of the most advanced in the world, it’s also one of the most diverse. Today, hundreds of woman-owned, veteran-owned and minority-owned businesses will have a chance to land new contracts.”

The Pure Michigan Business Connect supplier summits are exclusive purchaser-supplier matchmaking engagements that provide partnership opportunities to Michigan vendors. These summits have helped contribute to more than $1.85 billion in revenue for Michigan companies, translating into approximately 9,250 jobs created across the state.
