Michigan WWII History Lesson - USS Sable and USS Wolverine

Top view of the training aircraft carrier Sable on Lake Michigan with FM Wildcat making a deck launch - 1945

The Great Lakes provided vital support for the war effort in WWII, from building 28 fleet subs in Manitowoc, WI to providing the bulk of U.S. industrial output. We could not have won the war if it weren't for the benefits of the Great Lakes and the related industry they provided.

There was another benefit of the lakes that is often overlooked.  Japan quickly lost the war because, among many other things, its navy could not replace its carrier pilot losses. The U.S. was able to by training so many pilots in both comfort (calm seas) and safety (no enemy subs).

We took two old side-wheel Great Lakes passenger steamers and turned them into training carriers on Lake Michigan.

Virtually every carrier pilot trained in the war got his landing training on these amazing ships.  Sadly, nothing but these great photos and the wrecks of the aircraft that ditched alongside them remain to tell their fascinating story.

Check out the full history and photos of the USS Sable and USS Wolverine.

Vietnam Era Veterans Granted High School Diploma

diploma

Are you a veteran who served in the military during the Vietnam era and never had the opportunity to obtain your high school diploma? Don't let this be a barrier any longer to finding a good job.

The State of Michigan has passed legislation that allows honorably discharged WWII, Korean or Vietnam era veterans to proudly check the box on their next application that indicates, "I have a high school diploma."

“Oftentimes, to their detriment, veterans have integrity and are honest to a fault," says Michigan Veterans' Services Division Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist, Rick Donovan. "In today’s age of internet applications for jobs, when asked if they have a high school diploma or GED they will say “NO,” which excludes them from the interview process. An example could be a veteran who is a skilled trades person who entered military service prior to completion of high school. After 30 years working in their field they find themselves unemployed due to the downturn in the economy. This legislation will afford many veterans the opportunity to simply say “YES” on today’s applications, allowing them to be interviewed by employers, being able to share their skills in person, their work history, certifications and abilities leading to more employment opportunities."

Many Vietnam era veterans are still in the workforce and obtaining a high school diploma will no longer preclude them from employment opportunities that require a minimum of a high school diploma.
