Stories of Michigan's military veterans and the people dedicated to their success.
Marquette VA Work-Study Frank Lombard is a busy guy! In addition to his full-time social work class schedule at Northern Michigan University Frank finds the time to serve veterans any way he can. Frank was an Army Infantryman and served on Active Duty from 2005 to 2010. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and was assigned to 2nd platoon, Charlie Troop, 3rd Squadron, 4th Calvary Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. He had two combat deployments to Iraq: 2006–2007 (15 months) and 2008–2009 (12 months). Upon his return home to the Western UP, Frank became is a tireless advocate for veterans. There is little that Frank does that is not motivated by his desire to help veterans.
The following is a partial list of Frank’s undertakings to assist veterans:
§ Member of the Veterans Advisory Council for Congressman Dan Benishek, advising on veteran related issues and working to identify solutions.
§ Buddy to Buddy Volunteer Veteran providing free support and referrals for resources to OEF/OIF/OND service members and veterans. This includes visiting armories during drills, veterans’ job fairs, and reunion briefings.
§ Volunteer at the Room at the Inn which is a rotating homeless shelter in Marquette. He meets with veterans and provides information about local VA healthcare resources and enrollment forms. He also provides referral information for emergency needs.
§ Outreaches to student Veterans at NMU: Working with student veterans at NMU to improve the quality of services for veterans, identifying unmet needs, and possible solutions, for example he helped create the veterans lounge and attended meetings with orientation staff to suggest improvements.
When asked about how he fits in all of his volunteer activities with a full class load Frank says, “I do what I can when I can. It’s not an everyday thing, but some weeks it can be. It gives me many opportunities to get experience and I try to get exposed to different things that will help me build a more informed perspective on what is going on. I learn more than just what is provided in the classroom.” It’s this type of attitude, ambition, and focus that makes Frank Lombard an asset to all veterans. Expect great things in the future from, and because of Frank.
