Improving talent development means helping educators understand the needs of job providers, providing businesses the opportunity to craft future talent, and preparing job seekers for in-demand careers.
At the 2016 Governor's Economic and Education Summit, educators, business leaders, and workforce professionals from across the state will convene for a day of insightful presentations, featured speakers, and productive discussion. By bringing together leaders from different sectors and geographies, the state will be better equipped to compete in the knowledge-based economy of the future.
Business leaders from around the state are encouraged to attend this annual Summit to help achieve the Governor's vision and mission:
Vision: To make Michigan the #1 state for talent through collective action between the business and education communities.
Mission: To bring together business, education, public and nonprofit leaders to focus on the intersection between education and business:
- To help educators understand the needs of job providers.
- To better prepare job seekers for in-demand careers in Michigan.
- To provide opportunities for businesses to help craft future talent.
- To better understand the challenges faced by business and education working together.
- To improve talent development by illuminating initiatives that can help overcome challenges.
This year's Summit will take place on March 15 at the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids.
The 2016 Governor's Economic and Education Summit is pleased to present Jaime Casap as this year's keynote speaker. Jaime is the Chief Education Evangelist at Google, Inc., evangelizing the power and potential of the web and technology as enabling and supporting capabilities in pursuit of creating powerful learning models for students.
In addition to networking, panel discussions, and a keynote speech from Mr. Casap, business leaders will benefit from this year's Best Practice awards, focused on talent development, attraction and retention efforts that can be replicated across many companies, industries and regions.

Michigan Veterans Employment Solutions, launched on LinkedIn
in October 2012, with over 1,350 members as of October 2015, was founded
primarily to foster communication, partnerships, and initiatives that close the
gap between veterans and employers.
Veterans add significant value to Michigan's workforce and
economy, but the recruitment, hiring, and retention of veterans can be a
challenging process for many companies. Despite common agreement among Michigan
employers, whose perceptions of veterans include accountability, team-builders,
and strong work ethic, many employers are unaware of specific resources within the state
to recruit veterans. Employers have also voiced concerns about
military-to-civilian workplace transition, military skills translation, and Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Michigan Veterans Employment Solutions is dedicated to break
down these and other barriers that employers face in their onboarding efforts
and veterans recruitment initiatives. In order to accomplish this task, Michigan
Veterans Employment Solutions has brought together a unique and diverse group
of stakeholders: Veterans, Military Service Members, Business Leaders, Thought
Leaders, Educators, Advocates, Legislators, and Government Officials. The group has welcomed members from public and
private organizations, such as Chambers of Commerce, Economic / Workforce
Development, Industry / Trades Associations, Non-Profit Organizations, Veteran-Owned
Business, Veterans Service Organizations, and the VA.
Topics of discussion, issues, and shared resources have
included: business case for hiring veterans, challenges to employers, disability
awareness (PTSD, TBI), employers' best practices, military cultural awareness,
outreach, job fairs, and other networking events, sourcing military / veteran talent,
transferable skills translation, and veterans on campus. Though originally
intended not to duplicate existing job boards, Michigan Veterans Employment
Solutions encourages posts and discussion threads from Michigan businesses with
veteran recruitment initiatives.
Individuals with LinkedIn profiles are encouraged to request
membership by visiting Michigan Veterans Employment Solutions on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/grp/home?gid=4692992
