MDOT suspends construction for July Fourth holiday,
urges safe driving

Fast Facts:
- MDOT is suspending as much work as possible from 3 p.m. Thursday, July 3, until 6 a.m. Monday, July 7.
- AAA Michigan estimates nearly 1.4 million Michigan residents will travel this holiday weekend.
- Up-to-date construction and traffic information is available on MDOT's Mi Drive Web site: www.michigan.gov/drive.

July 1, 2014 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will once again make travel easier for motorists this Fourth of July holiday by lifting traffic restrictions on 110 of 145 projects statewide.

Beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 3, and continuing until 6 a.m. Monday, July 7, MDOT will suspend construction wherever possible on state roads and bridges. This will help ease the ride for the estimated 1.4 million Michigan residents AAA Michigan expects to be driving this holiday weekend.

"The Fourth of July holiday is one of the highlights of summer in Michigan," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "In an effort to help motorists get out and enjoy all of their activities and events, MDOT will suspend work on most projects for the holiday, but we have to keep some lane restrictions in place. We urge all motorists to drive with caution through work zones. Buckle up, obey the posted speed limits, pay attention to road signs and orange barrels, and put the cell phone away while driving. We want everyone to get to their holiday destinations - and back home - safely."

MDOT advises motorists to plan their routes by checking the Mi Drive traffic website (www.michigan.gov/drive) for alerts on traffic incidents, live traffic webcams and updated construction information.
