Enbridge supports revitalization efforts at Father Marquette National Memorial at Straits State Park

Enbridge presenting donation checkWorking with the Michigan History Foundation, Enbridge is playing a vital role in assisting the process to enable planning for the restoration of a portion of the Father Marquette National Memorial at Straits State Park that was heavily damaged 15 years ago. The $20,000 donation presented by Enbridge Energy Company will be used to jump-start partnership and planning efforts for the west unit of the park in St. Ignace. The project will be led by Department of Natural Resources staff from the Michigan Historical Center and the Parks and Recreation Division.

”Enbridge has been part of Michigan life for more than 60 years, and we work hard to live up to that ‘good neighbor’ status in a variety of ways – economically, socially and culturally,” said Enbridge Community Relations Manager Jason Manshum. “Enbridge is committed to enriching the communities near our operations. We know that being a good neighbor means being essential to the fabric of a community. Helping jump-start the Father Marquette National Memorial at Straits State Park reflects what is truly important to us – the values of integrity, safety and respect.”

In 2000, a fire destroyed the museum associated with the Father Marquette National Memorial located at Straits State Park. The goal of this project is to develop the site in a manner that continues to honor Father Marquette and to explore the story of the first contacts between Native people and the French at the Straits of Mackinac. A broad range of community partners will be engaged for this effort.

“This allows us to move forward on our Straits State Park Management Plan commitment to create specific plans for the site. I believe we have the opportunity to create a sustainable program that will support tourism, exploration of the culture of Native people, and education in St. Ignace and the Straits area,” said Sandra Clark, director of the Michigan Historical Center, which manages history interpretation at the site.
