DNR offers free youth camping and fishing programs at Belle Isle Park
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced that Belle Isle Park (Wayne County) will host two free, introductory recreation programs this summer through the DNR’s Recreation 101 program. Registration is required for both programs. See below for registration details.
Friday, July 24
Rec 101: Intro to Fishing will have a morning session from 10 a.m. to noon and an afternoon session from 1 to 3 p.m. Children have the opportunity to learn fish anatomy, parts of their rods and reels, proper casting techniques, and the proper way to handle fish. Participants should meet at the Model Yacht Basin.
Friday, Aug. 7-Saturday, Aug. 8
Rec 101: Into to Fishing and Camping will begin at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with games relating to fishing and camping. There will be free time to enjoy the park from 1 to 5 p.m. and campsite setup will begin at the White House at 6 p.m. The program will challenge children to learn what is needed to build a successful campsite. Burgers and hot dogs will be provided free of charge for dinner.
"Camping and fishing are great ways for kids to get hooked on a healthy, active lifestyle," said Karis Floyd, Belle Isle Park supervisor. "We're pleased to offer that opportunity at Belle Isle."
Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to participate in either event.
Registration is required by Thursday, July 23. Please contact Karis Floyd at 313-396-6873 to register.

The park provides a wide assortment of educational and recreational opportunities. Learn more at www.belleislepark.org.
There is no charge to participate in these Recreation 101 programs, but a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Belle Isle.
A Recreation Passport grants vehicle access to any Michigan state park, boat launch, state forest campground or nonmotorized state trailhead parking. Residents can purchase the Passport for just $11 ($5 for motorcycles) at the time of Michigan license plate renewal through Secretary of State. Forgot to check “YES” during renewal? Residents and nonresidents can purchase a Recreation Passport window sticker during regular business hours at state parks. Learn more about how the Recreation Passport supports state parks and local outdoor recreation opportunities at www.michigan.gov/recreationpassport.
