Fit Testing

During the PHEP/LHD Partners meeting in Gaylord, a question related to fit testing came up in discussion with a request for further information.  As we reviewed the guidance received from CDC, we did not find a clear requirement for fit testing at this time.  Following consultation with the Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health, DEPR determined the following regarding the issue of fit testing:

1. There is no requirement or guidance from CDC on fit testing for this cooperative agreement.
2. LHD accreditation does not have a fit-testing component.
3. Each LHD should have an existing respiratory protection plan in place (for CD primarily, think about TB or other Communicable Diseases) that could provide guidance for EPCs on fit testing.
4. LHDs may want to develop a just-in-time fit testing plan should a response activity warrant the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) that requires fit testing prior to use.
   a. Any plan to fit-test (planned or JIT) needs to ensure that a

medical evaluation is done prior to the actual fit-testing.
   b. The plan for JIT fit-testing should be a component of the respiratory

       protection plan.

DEPR is investigating the possibility of hosting a fit test training during the fiscal year, However, it may need to be moved to the next budget period depending on financial support. If there are additional questions contact Mary Macqueen at macqueenm@michigan.gov

Hazard Vulnerability Assessment – Virtual Technical Assistance

The CDC requires state and local health departments to maintain current hazard vulnerability assessment data. In BP1-SUPP, local health departments have been asked to complete and submit the ASPR-developed HVA tool no later than Friday, March 29th. To assist in troubleshooting this tool, DEPR will be hosting three upcoming technical assistance sessions via Adobe Connect in January 2019. Each session will provide an informal setting for users to navigate the HVA tool, as well as address any challenges or questions that have come to date. These optional sessions will cover the same content, following a structure that is largely predicated by those in attendance. Sessions will take place on the following days:

January 8, 2019 – 2:00 PM EST to 3:30 PM EST
January 15, 2019 – 3:00 PM EST to 4:30 PM EST
January 23, 2019 – 9:00 AM EST to 11:30 AM EST

Dial In: 1-877-873-80179, 201
Access: 4130054

Please direct RSVP or direct any HVA related questions to Jason Smith at smithj20@michigan.gov.
