The DEQ today announced it has approved revisions to the surface water discharge permit for the Humboldt Mill near Marquette.
The permit safeguards wetlands and the middle branch of the Escanaba River.
Revisions made to the permit in response to public comment include:
• The total authorized flow was halved, from 2.8 million gallons per day (MGD) to
1.4 MGD.
• Effluent limitations were added for total dissolved solids.
• Temperature monitoring was added.
In addition, Eagle Mine LLC provided supporting information for their anti-degradation demonstration.
In accordance with its usual permitting process, the DEQ placed a draft permit on public notice on Dec. 12, 2014, and held a public hearing Jan. 13, 2015. The DEQ prepared a responsiveness summary addressing comments received during the public hearing and comment period and identifying the revisions made to the permit since the comment period.
Both the permit and the responsiveness summary can be reviewed online at www.michigan.gov/deq/0,4561,7-135-3313_3682_3713-351896--,00.html.
