DEQ Awards Funding for Scrap Tire Cleanups

Department of Environmental Quality Director Dan Wyant today announced grants totaling $357,450  for the complete cleanup of seven scrap tire sites and 27 community cleanup days to reduce potential public health and environmental concerns including fire and mosquitoes associated with these scrap tires.

Scrap tires can threaten not only our environment, but public health as well. Runoff from scrap tire fires can contaminate groundwater and surface water, and scrap tire sites are an ideal habitat for the breeding of mosquitoes carrying disease such as West Nile Virus.

The DEQ Scrap Tire Program is charged with ensuring the proper disposal of all scrap tires generated in the state and the cleanup of existing scrap tire piles in amounts of 500 or more. Program staff regularly inspect scrap tire collection sites, processors, end-users and generators, which include tire dealers and auto scrap yards.

Inspection of scrap tire collection sites includes the collection of mosquito larval samples for analysis by the Department of Community Health to ensure that sites do not create unhealthy living environments.

This grant funding will protect the health of these communities, facilitating the cleanup of more than 283,530 passenger tire equivalents, a measure used to account for different weights and sizes of tires that may be present at a cleanup site.

Bay, Lenawee, Luce, Kent, Montcalm and Newaygo counties have private property cleanups scheduled in FY14. The remaining counties listed will hold community cleanup day activities and should be contacted directly to learn about dates, times and requirements. Many of these grantees will be holding activities at multiple locations in their jurisdictions, providing a wide availability of disposal options to residents. The grantees will have until August 31, 2014, to complete contract requirements for having the tires removed and processed in accordance with a DEQ-approved tire removal plan.
