Applications Sought for $3.1 Million in Water Quality Improvement Grants

The DEQ has announced the availability of approximately $3.1 million of state and federal funding for water quality projects that restore and protect Michigan’s wetlands, lakes, and streams. Units of government, nonprofit organizations, and universities are eligible to apply.

The funding opportunities include:

Clean Michigan Initiative – Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Grants:

Approximately $1 million is available to fund the installation of best management practices in critical areas of watershed management plans that have been approved by the DEQ. Proposals must include a minimum of 25 percent local match.

Federal Clean Water Act, Section 319:

Approximately $2.1 million is available to implement priority recommendations of previously approved watershed management plans. Proposals must include a minimum of 25 percent local match.

Notices of Intent are due August 21, 2013. Full applications from invited entities are due October 18, 2013. The DEQ’s Nonpoint Source Program staff will be hosting a Webinar Thursday August 8, 2013, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. EST to discuss the grant application schedule, program priorities, eligibility criteria, and how to successfully submit a Notice of Intent. Grant awards are contingent upon the sale of Clean Michigan Initiative general obligation bonds to support these projects and the appropriation of funding by the federal and Michigan Legislatures.
