Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge

j

On July 17th the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge is having a volunteer day! From the RCNWR Website:

“Every third Friday of the month, we will host a volunteer day for anyone who is interested. Activities will run from 9am until noon and involve a variety of tasks from winter rabbit tracking to invasive plant removal to helping us get organized with some much needed “spring” cleaning. This is a great opportunity to learn about the Refuge, what we do to protect wildlife and their habitat, gain experience, meet new people, and have fun! ”

Check out some of these opportunities near you and consider reaching out; our teams will welcome an extra pair of hands.

Field Teams often work in the back-country. To volunteer with a field team please contact Dylan Cookson at (207) 624-6092 or by e-mail at dylan.cookson@maine.gov at least one week in advanced. Specific directions to work-sites will be provided for interested volunteers.

Appalachian Trail

The Maine Conservation Corps has two projects taking place on the Appalachian Trail this year. These crews will be tenting in these areas for the duration of their projects.

Bemis Mountain - Chantelle Hay's team be involved in two different projects around the ridges of Bemis Mountain. On the first day of their first week they will be taking a long hike with all of their equipment into their work site. Many hands make light work and they could use your help.

  1. Just North of the Main Summit there is an ancient mud hole of undetermined depth that the AT crosses. The project is to clear an 825 ft relocation around the mud hole. The easiest access is via a road that has been closed with water-bars by Wagner Forests. It is a 3 mile walk to the trail from “Bemis Track” a nearby logging road.
  2. The second project is a steep eroding section of trail north of the 1st peak of Bemis Mt. Work was started here but not finished in 2001. The goal would be to build about 100 stone steps and a few water-bars. Camping will be near Bemis Stream. Volunteers are welcome for day time and overnight participation.

Where: Appalachian Trail starting at Bemis Mountain near Byron and Berlin, Maine. Interested volunteers should contact Dylan Cookson at least a week in advanced for more specific directions and event planning.

Approximately 0.8 miles of trail is being relocated. Trail will be cleared through dense forest. Work will involve stumping, grubbing, and the construction of stone stairs.
