Public Information Office Receives Two NACo Achievement Awards
Montgomery County’s Office of Public Information received two National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Awards this year for outstanding programs. Both Cápsula Informativa and the County Executive’s Senior Initiative were recognized with the prestigious, national awards.
Cápsula Informative, hosted by Lorna Virgili, is an innovative and effective tool implemented by Montgomery County’s Office of Public Information to inform the fast growing Hispanic community in the County. A weekly Spanish language television news and information show airing on County Cable 6, it includes interviews, news, and PSAs. Since its launch in January, 2013 the show has addressed issues that include education, health care, transportation, public safety, economic development, employment, senior services, recycling, consumer protection, pedestrian safety, community engagement, recent legislation, stellar community service programs, volunteering and opportunities for recreation.
The Senior Initiative is a multi-year, cross departmental project to improve coordination, community outreach and promotion of programs designed to serve seniors and identify and plan for the short and long-term needs of seniors. The Office of Public Information was represented on the Senior Subcabinet and provided expertise in one of the eight key areas, communication and outreach.
“I am proud of the work that the Office of Public Information provides to all County residents,” said Patrick Lacefield, director of the Office of Public Information. “Cápsula Informativa has been airing for almost two years and does an excellent job reaching out to our Hispanic population. The Senior Initiative addresses the needs of our growing senior population, enhancing a variety of critical senior services. Both of these vital programs strive to provide unique programs and useful information to all of our residents.”
