ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Each One Teach One

The Literacy Council has 150 individuals waiting for tutors, and receives requests from more prospective learners every day. The Council needs to expand the tutor base in order to help these motivated adults obtain critical literacy skills. 

  • Are you a member of a church, synagogue, mosque, or other religious organization?
  • Does your neighborhood have a listserv?
  • Are you active in a local alumni association?
  • Are you out and about in the community running errands or shopping? Can you post flyers?
  • Do you use social media?

You have access to materials that you can easily download and share.

EVENTS

1. Halloween at the Holiday Park Senior Center

Two great events, one great night!

a) Your Grandkids and You- bring your grandchildren all dressed up to celebrate Halloween. Games and treats are included in this fun time!

  • Time: 4:30pm-5:30pm 

b) Halloween Dance Party- Come in costume, and dance to the favorite music with DJ Vinny and Good Vibrations.

2. Latino Health Forum

You are invited to come participate and experience the AmeriGroup Real Solutions in Healthcare -Latino Health Forum. This is a bi-monthly luncheon where Amerigroup will provide networking tools and share resources to help better the community.

3. Latinos in the Washington Metro Area

The book presentation organized by Montgomery College will highlight the early days of the Latino Festival, the Central American peace movement, and the struggle for Civil and Immigrants rights. Notable Latino residents will be present to give accounts of their first hand experiences. The presentation will be in English, with Spanish translation available. Refreshments will be served.

4. New Happenings at the Department of Recreation

a) Monster Mash Bash at Mid County Community Recreation Center

Join us for this family costume party with games, crafts, and dancing! FREE

b) Basketball Classes with Department of Recreation

Basketball non competitive beginner leagues are now available for all ages,starting with youth in grades K-2, 3-8, and 9-12. Come and learn how to Increase balance, coordination and fine motor skills while learning the fundamentals of basketball.  The league emphasizes basic skills, good sportsmanship, and fun! Teams are assigned to the closest available gym, and it includes four practices at the location and time you are placed, and four low-key scrimmages.

Instructional teams may be scheduled hourly as follows:

Saturdays: 9:00am-6:00pm 

Sundays: 12:00pm-6:00pm

Registration is now open and closes in November 7/ 30, depending on the grade level.

CLASSES/PROGRAMS

1. Classes and Programs with CASA de Maryland

a) Citizenship Clinic

CASA de Maryland along with AILA (American Immigration Lawyers Association), Charles W. Gilchrist Center for Cultural Diversity and Equal Justice Works are hosting a Citizenship Clinic. It is for Community members who have been legal permanent residents for at least 5 years, and are interested in applying for the Citizenship process, there will be legal counsel to aid in the process. Please call and make a reservation today!

b) Evening English Class

Classes are held Monday-Thursday, 7:00pm-9:00pm and will start in January, 2015.

Class Registration:

* The cost for CASA members is $130 for 12 weeks of class.  Books cost $50 (used for two sessions).  Payments must be made with credit/ debit card or money order (no cash accepted). Your information will be placed on a waitlist, and you will be notified a week before registration.

2. Maryland Women's Business Center October Classes

Rock Your Content

Your content needs to tell your story and engage customers so they want to buy from you. This class will show great examples of content marketing, teach what your brand stands for and help you create a content marketing plan.

3. Montgomery College Programs

a) Basic Computer Skills Class for ESOL Students

Is English your second or third language? Do you wish you could communicate with your friends and family via e-mail? Do you wish you could use the internet to look for a job? Do you want to use a computer to create a professional looking resume so you can apply for a new job? If you answered “Yes,” Montgomery College can help you!

  • When: Tuesdays and Thursdays, November 4-December 4
  • Time: 6:00pm-8:00pm
  • Where: Gilchrist Center at Gaithersburg Library, 2nd Floor, 18330 Montgomery Village Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD 20879

b) Certified Nursing Assistant Program

Do you want a job in Healthcare? Do you need help with English, Math and/or reading? If yes, then this program might be for you! In this program, you will learn:

- How to take care of patients and residents in a clinical setting,
- How to take blood pressure,
- How to use CPR when a person stops breathing and many more useful skills. 

Program requirements include:

  • You must be a Maryland resident,
  • You must have a high school diploma/GED
  • You must have low income, and  
  • You must need help with your English, Math and reading skills 

There are free classroom and clinical trainings to prepare you for the state certification exams.  

Classes will start in early January and will be held on Mondays to Fridays for duration of about 3 months. Classes will be held at Montgomery College, Cafritz Arts Building, 2nd Floor, WDCE 930 King Street Takoma Park, MD 20901.   

c) Certification for Apartment Maintenance Technicians (CAMT) 

Do you want to learn what it takes to get a good job in a growing industry? However the only thing in your way is help with English, Math, and or your Reading skills? Look no further! CAMT might be for you. While learning work related skills, how to maintain and repair apartment interior (and exterior) electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC and appliances, you will improve your English, Math, Reading, and computer skills.  

Classes run from February 5, 2015 through April 1, 2015 weekdays 9:00am-4:00pm at the Gudelsky Building Room, 126 Rockville Campus (corner of Hungerford and North Campus drives). 

Orientation Dates-  

December- 12/04/2014, 12/11/2014, and 12/18/2014 

January- 01/15/2015, 01/22/2015, and 01/29/2015 

Where: Montgomery College, Cafritz Arts Building, 2nd Floor, WDCE 930 King Street Takoma Park, MD 20901   

*YOU MUST ATTEND AT LEAST ONE ORIENTATION TO ATTEND CLASSES IN FEBRUARY.

d) Nonprofit Leadership Boot Camp Program (2014/2015)

The highly interactive program covers practical approaches to leadership, planning, program development, supervision, communication and community engagement.

Participants will network with peers and stay in touch between sessions. Expert training and facilitators will deliver an effective, intense, and interactive program.

  • When: 11/14, 12/12, 2/13, 3/13, 4/3,  4/24, 5/15, 5/29 (8 training sessions)
  • Time: 9:00am-4:30pm
  • Where: 40 West Gude Drive, Room 115, Rockville, MD 20850 
  • Tuition and Fees: $495 + $400 fee = $895, Non-Maryland residents add $400, Tuition Waiver Applies: Seniors (Age 60+) pay fee only. 
  • Facilitator: Justin Pollock, Principal of Orgforward Llc.
  • Application deadline: November 3 (Admission to the boot camp is competitive and applicants will receive a decision early November).

1. ESOL Teacher Position available at CASA de Maryland

CASA de Maryland is hiring experienced and qualified ESOL teachers, for both the morning and evening classes that will teach functional English grammar, and conversational skills to adult learners of diverse professional and educational backgrounds.
