1. Community News and Announcements Survey

The Gilchrist Center Community News and Announcements team would like to receive your comments about the e-newsletter. The comments and suggestions you provide will enable the center to bring  productive and effective information to better serve you and your community.

2. Each One Teach One

The Literacy Council has 150 individuals waiting for tutors, and receives requests from more prospective learners every day. The Council needs to expand the tutor base in order to help these motivated adults obtain critical literacy skills. 

  • Are you a member of a church, synagogue, mosque, or other religious organization?
  • Does your neighborhood have a listserv?
  • Are you active in a local alumni association?
  • Are you out and about in the community running errands or shopping? Can you post flyers?
  • Do you use social media?

You have access to materials that you can easily download and share.

EVENTS

1. Greater Washington Immigration Film Festival (GWIFF)

Save the dates for the Greater Washington Immigration Film Festival (GWIFF) featuring films telling immigrant stories promoting empathy, understanding and motivation for systemic change. The film festival stimulates public awareness and involvement in the national effort for just and equitable immigration reform in the United States.

  • When: October 23, 24, 25 & 26
  • Where: Various faith communities and theaters throughout the national capital area

Mark your calendar for the big night at DC's GALA Theater October 25th! Join for appetizers, wine, and live entertainment. Then settle in for the Washington premiere screening of the film "Who Is Dayani Cristal?" (2013) by Gael Garcia Bernal, Mexican actor and activist, and Marc Silver. (Fee $25).

2. Halloween at the Holiday Park Senior Center

Two great events, one great night!

a)   Your Grandkids and You- bring your grandchildren all dressed up to celebrate Halloween. Games and treats are included in this fun time!

  • Time: 4:30pm-5:30pm 

b)   Halloween Dance Party- Come in costume, and dance to the favorite music with DJ Vinny and Good Vibrations.

3. Literacy Council of Montgomery County Free Potluck Dinner

Please join us for an evening of fellowship, fun, and food from near and far. The most recent “Skill book 4” graduates and the newest Citizens of the US will be honored. Bring food from your home country, wear native clothing, come and entertain guests with traditional music and dancing, arts and crafts from your culture.

4. October Happenings at the Department of Recreation

a) Fall Harvest Festival in Wheaton

Please bring a canned good for entry into the raflle. Register online here or in person at the center (see address below). it is a FREE event

b) Halloween Haunted House at Long Branch

Elementary school-aged children are invited to put on their costumes and come to the Long Branch Community Center for the annual Halloween Haunted House. There will be a costume contest, pumpkin carving and more. Children MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian. For more information, please call 240-777-6965.

5. The World of Montgomery Festival Exploring the World in Your Own Backyard

WOMF

When: Sunday, October 19

Time: 12:00pm-5:00pm

Where: Westfield Wheaton Plaza Mall parking lot (next to the Wheaton metro)  

Free admission family pass is available here!

Sponsored by Fund for Montgomery and organized by KID Museum, the free festival includes an international village, a global kitchen with chef demonstrations of ethnic food, a craft market, a Parade of Cultures, two performance stages of dance and music, traditional arts and fun interactive activities for the whole family.

CLASSES/PROGRAMS

1. CASA de Maryland Evening Classes Registration

  • When: Thursday, November 20
  • Time: 6:00pm-9:00pm
  • Where: Northwood High School, 919 University Blvd. West, Silver Spring, MD 20901. 

Classes are held Monday-Thursday, 7pm to 9pm and will start in January, 2015. 

* The cost for CASA members is $130 for 12 weeks of class.  Books cost $50 (used for two sessions).  Payments must be made with credit/ debit card or money order (no cash accepted). Your information will be placed on a waitlist, and you will be notified a week before registration.

2. Computer Literacy Class in Wheaton

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Montgomery County in partnership with the Gilchrist Center for Cultural Diversity is offering a new computer literacy class in English and Spanish for small business owners and anyone seeking basic computer skills.

Option 1

  • When: Mondays from 6:00pm-8:00pm and Fridays from 3:30pm-5:30pm (8 classes)
  • Fees: $20

Class started September 29. Hurry, limited space is still available!

Option 2

  • When: Saturdays from 1:00pm-3:00pm (4 classes)
  • Fees: $20

Class started October 4. Hurry, limited space is still available!

All classes will be held at Ana G Mendez University System (AGMUS), 11006 Veirs Mill Road, Wheaton, MD 20902

4. Maryland Women's Business Center October Classes

a) Woman-Owned and Working it! Certifications and Business Opportunities for Women-Owned Businesses:

Join Maryland Women's Business Center for an exciting workshop to learn more about the certifications available to women-owned enterprises, including the federal WOSB self-certification, WBE certification from WBENC and MBE certification from Maryland.

You will hear from a panel of experts and successful women entrepreneurs about how to turn the woman-owned certifications into contracts and business with federal, state, and local government and major corporations!

b) QuickBooks in Spanish:

Learn how to use QuickBooks to pay your bills, and track the financial performance of your small business.

c) Rock Your Content

Your content needs to tell your story and engage customers so they want to buy from you. This class will show great examples of content marketing, teach what your brand stands for and help you create a content marketing plan.

5. Montgomery College Classes

a) Free Citizenship Classes at Montgomery College

Do you need educational or legal help preparing for the US citizenship test and/or interview? Come to an information session and discover how Montgomery College may be able to help you for free!

*The Montgomery College citizenship preparation program is for legal permanent residents who live in Maryland and are learning English as a second language.

b) GED® Community Information Session with Montgomery College

Come and get information about the GED® test preparation program. You will learn about:

  •  Classes and the GED® exam;
  •  How long it takes to prepare;
  •  What you need to do to register for classes or the GED® test.

You do not need to register for this event. The meeting includes time for questions and answers. It is strongly recommended that you attend an information session. Attending does not mean you are registered for classes.
