Dear Friends:

Today, I was pleased to host a “meet and greet”  for businesses and Hire One Youth employees at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.  More than 100 non-municipal employers have provided funding to pay for at least one six-week summer job to support Baltimore City’s 2012 YouthWorks program.  Nearly 70 of these business champions directly hired job ready 16- to 21-year olds to work at their offices, banks, and firms.

This year, as a result of the Hire One Youth campaign, we have added more than 275 additional job opportunities for young people.  This brings the total number of YouthWorks summer jobs with private sector, nonprofit, and city and state government employers throughout the Baltimore area to more than 5,300.

I am very grateful to the companies that are taking part in Hire One Youth by giving youth and young adults valuable work experiences this summer.  Today, I asked that they continue to build upon the momentum by considering providing full-time, year-round or part-time, school year jobs for young people.  And, my hope is that even more businesses will hire through YouthWorks’ Hire One Youth initiative next year.

I want to especially thank Mr. Don Fry, President and CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee, who has agreed to continue as chair of the Hire One Youth Leadership Team which is comprised of local business leaders from various industries.   Don has been a tremendous partner in this effort and a major contributor to its stellar success this year.

Summer job opportunities provide young people real-world experience and important skills that will build future careers at the same time they provide meaningful contributions to the employers they serve.

YouthWorks is operated by the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development with the assistance of employers and workforce partners, and with financial support from a variety of contributors.  Director Karen Sitnick and MOED staff have done an excellent job keeping the program strong even during tough economic times.

YouthWorks is part of Baltimore City Super Summer, a partnership between the City, Baltimore City Public Schools and nonprofits to ensure that every child has access to learning, meals, reading and other fun activities during the summer. Visit www.youthbmore.org  or call 211 for more information about Baltimore City Super Summer.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at my website or by email at mayor@baltimorecity.gov. You can also follow the Mayor’s Office and be a part of the conversation on Facebook or Twitter.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake
Mayor, City of Baltimore
