National Child Abuse Prevention Month
Every April in honor of the anniversary of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, the Children's Bureau within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services sponsors National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The theme of this month is "Making Meaningful Connections". In support of this movement, Mayor Greg Fischer has signed a proclamation to promote public awareness of child abuse and encourage community involvement. The Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods will join in various efforts throughout the city to encourage and assist residents, departments and organizations as we work together to reduce child abuse in Louisville. Youth Leaders Wanted!
Youth leaders are wanted for the One Love Louisville Youth Implementation Team. The Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods is currently seeking 20 youth and young adults between the ages of 13 and 24 years of age to assist with the execution of the One Love Louisville: Youth Edition action plan. This action plan is due to be released May 2015 as a part of Louisville's acceptance into the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention. Mayor's Give A Day Week of Service (April 18-26)
Each year, Give A Day Week is a time of vivid and often stirring reminders of the basic goodness, kindness and compassion of our fellow citizens. We see the community come together -- friends helping friends, strangers helping strangers in endless ways. That’s the real story of Louisville. Healing Futures Fellowship Applications Open
Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Welness' 2015 Healing Futures Fellowship applications are now open! This is a six week fellowship program is open to young people who will be entering the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Fellows who complete the program are eligible for up to a $1000 stipend at the end of the program. Over the course of six weeks, Fellows engage in collaborative and hands-on learning, knowledge, and skill development with dialogue, evaluation, assessment, and advocacy. The Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods, in collaboration with Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation, DJ Phat Matt and MC Young Commercial, successfully piloted two parties for youth ages 17 years and younger and they were a hit! The first party took place on March 13th at Newburg Community Center and the second was held on March 27th at the South Louisville Community Center. Both parties provided refreshments, basketball, music and a good, safe time for approximately 150 youth. Due to this success, we will host more Community Center Take Overs (details coming soon).
Making Meaningful Connections Mixer
Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services' Department of Community Based Services, Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods and Louisville Central Community Centers have teamed up in honor of National Child Abuse Awareness month to host the Making Meaning Connections Mixer. This mixer brings together individuals and organizations interested in fostering and/or sponsoring with individuals, families and working professionals who have experience within the foster care/adoption system. This event is free and open to the public. Hope to see you there!

Psychological First Aid Training
Kentucky Community Crisis Response Board and the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods are hosting a psychological first aid training. Two, of the many, benefits of this training include: 1) learning how to support your family, co-workers and community with psycho-logical first aid and self-care strategies and, 2) recognizing personal resiliency, how to build it and maintain it. QPR Gatekeeper Training-Suicide Prevention
These free training's are designed to educate the community about suicide prevention, and remove the stigma associated with mental health issues. If we can help just one person, we have reached our goal. Training is limited to 30 people per session. To register call Luther Brown at 502-494-9903.
