People who live near water are not the only ones who experience flooding. Floods can move and spread for miles. Flash floods can begin and end within just hours and cause major damage. Only a few inches of water can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your home.
Standard homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policies do not cover flooding. Did you know that more than 20 percent of flood insurance claims come from medium- and low-risk areas? If you live in a Special Flood Hazard Area, you are nearly four times more likely to experience a flood than a fire during a 30-year mortgage.
One way to protect yourself from a flood is through flood insurance. Anyone in Jefferson County can purchase flood insurance. Louisville Metro and MSD participate in the Community Rating System to help reduce flood risks, because of this residents in our community automatically receive up to 30 percent off their flood insurance rates.
Flood insurance coverage is available for residential and business structures, as well as contents. A single-family home can be insured for up to $250,000. An additional $100,000 can be purchased for home contents. Commercial buildings can be insured for up to $500,000. Business contents can be covered for up to $500,000. Renters can purchase coverage for up to $100,000 to cover personal belongings.
If you are interested in purchasing flood insurance, contact your insurance agent or go to www.floodsmart.gov to learn more.
