KYTC Eager to ‘Adopt’ Your Student’s Ideas

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) today announced the beginning of the 2014 Adopt-a-Highway Poster Contest.

Students across the Commonwealth are invited to submit creative works for use in the Adopt-a-Highway calendar for 2015. The contest is open to all Kentucky students of elementary, middle and high school age.

Exposure to the contest and to the Adopt-a-Highway program provides young people with a sense of ownership in Kentucky’s highways and stresses the importance of keeping Kentucky’s highways clean and free of litter. The contest is aimed at educating and encouraging children not to litter and to spread the message to others.

Parents, teachers and family members are asked to encourage children to participate in the contest. The entry form with the necessary certificate of authenticity can be obtained by contacting KYTC’s Office of Public Affairs at (502) 546-3419.

The form is also available online at http://adopt-a-highway.ky.gov/, where you can click on the “Art Contest Deadline” link.

Entries must be postmarked by Sept. 30, 2014.

This is a free showing open to the whole family. No outside food or drinks allowed, however concessions are available before and during the show. Doors open at 7:00pm

For more information, visit the Iroquois Amphitheater website.

Why You Should Buy Flood Insurance, Important Info from MSD

People who live near water are not the only ones who experience flooding. Floods can move and spread for miles. Flash floods can begin and end within just hours and cause major damage. Only a few inches of water can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your home.

Standard homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policies do not cover flooding. Did you know that more than 20 percent of flood insurance claims come from medium- and low-risk areas?  If you live in a Special Flood Hazard Area, you are nearly four times more likely to experience a flood than a fire during a 30-year mortgage.

One way to protect yourself from a flood is through flood insurance. Anyone in Jefferson County can purchase flood insurance. Louisville Metro and MSD participate in the Community Rating System to help reduce flood risks, because of this residents in our community automatically receive up to 30 percent off their flood insurance rates.

Flood insurance coverage is available for residential and business structures, as well as contents. A single-family home can be insured for up to $250,000. An additional $100,000 can be purchased for home contents. Commercial buildings can be insured for up to $500,000. Business contents can be covered for up to $500,000. Renters can purchase coverage for up to $100,000 to cover personal belongings.

If you are interested in purchasing flood insurance, contact your insurance agent or go to www.floodsmart.gov to learn more.
