Back to School Bash This Friday!

You and your family are invited to the Back to School Bash at the Southwest Family YMCA on Friday, August 22. This is a free event open to the whole community to kick off the new school year.

There will be swimming, experiments with the Mad Science team ($1 per activity), free pizza (first come, first served), and fun with inflatables!

There is no need to sign up or RSVP, just bring the family for a fun night to cap off the summer and welcome a new school year. Note, this is a family event so an adult must stay with all children - no drop offs allowed.

Where is the Hike, Bike & Paddle?

The Hike, Bike and Paddle takes place at the top of Waterfront Park's Great Lawn at E. Witherspoon Street near the dancing fountain. Parking is available in many areas around Waterfront Park. Check out street closures and no parking areas.

Activities include:

Sign Up for Youth Flag Football at the Sun Valley Community Center

If you have kids age 9-11, you may wish to sign them up for a youth flag football league set to begin in September. It's a great way for kids to get some exercise, have fun, and learn valuable lessons about teamwork. Participation is free.

The teams will practice at the Sun Valley Community Center (6505 Bethany Lane) at 6:00pm on Tuesday evenings. Games will be played at Joe Creason Park (1297 Trevilian Way) on Thursdays from 6:00-8:00pm).

Ridgewood Child Day Care Now Enrolling

Servicing the area since 1972, the Day Care at Ridgewood Baptist Church (6209 Greenwood Road) is now enrolling children to its care.

Their services are offered Monday through Friday, 6:00am-6:00pm, and all its classes use age appropriate curriculum. 

Weekly Rates are as follows:

  • Toddlers $122.00 
  • Two's $116.00 
  • Three and Four's $112.00 
  • Before and After School $83.00

Childcare Assistance Program is accepted and families with 2 or more children receive a 10% discount.

Metro Arts Center Fall '14 Schedule Announced

If you’re looking to acquire or refine a particular artistic skill - from playing guitar or cartooning to pottery and silversmithing - the Metro Arts Center has a fun, affordable class for you.

"An Evening With UofL Dance Theater" at Iroquois Amphitheater

With a suggested donation of $5, you can take in a unique evening of dance and drama at one of Louisville's most iconic settings. On Saturday, August 30, the UofL Dance Academy will perform an amazing show unlike anything you may have witnessed before.

Founded in 1972, The University of Louisville Dance Academy is the official school of the University of Louisville Dance Theatre. The focus at UofL is on serious ballet training in an academy setting. Alumni from the UofL Dance Academy have danced, or are presently dancing, in companies throughout the country and Canada, including the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the National Ballet of Canada, and the Louisville Ballet.

Kick the Habit, Free Program Helps Smokers Quit

If you are a smoker who wants to quit, an upcoming program at the Southwest YMCA offers the tools and support to stop smoking for good. "Kick the Habit" is a free 13-week program that combines and behavior modification counseling, nicotine gum, patches, and lozenges in a supportive group setting.

This highly successful program is science-based utilizing proven technique titled the Cooper/Clayton Method. It was started over 25 years ago by two faculty members at the University of Kentucky. Thomas Cooper, DDS, a dentist and former heavy smoker developed the program with Richard Clayton, PhD, an expert on drug addiction.

Held at the Southwest YMCA (2800 Fordhaven Road), the program will begin on Tuesday, August 19 at 6:00pm and continue through November. Each session lasts one hour.

Weekend Activities at Jefferson Memorial Forest

Get outdoors for some fresh air and exercise this weekend at Jefferson Memorial Forest. This weekend you can...

  • Take a guided hike of the Coral Ridge and Holsclaw Hill Ridge Loops, 7.4 miles (easy to moderate). Enjoy a summer hike in the company of Volunteer Naturalists. The group will meet in the Paul Yost Recreation area parking lot. In order to avoid the summer heat, the time has been changed to 8:00am.
