Metro Parks Golf Special for May

Metro Parks & Recreation is offering an affordable family golfing package at its nine golf courses during the Memorial Day Weekend. For only $20, a family of up to four members can play nine holes at any Metro Parks course. The $20 includes greens and cart fees, and families can take advantage of the deal after 4:30 p.m. on three days: Saturday, May 24, Sunday, May 25 and Monday, May 26. Families are encouraged to call in advance to book a tee time at the golf course of their choice!


FREE Bats Tickets Now Available

The program is once again split into two parts, with each part described below: COMMUNITY NIGHTS:  

  • The Bats will host two community nights, providing tickets, hot dogs, and soft drinks to non-profit groups who would not be able to afford a Bats game under regular circumstances. These two nights will include 4,000 guests for each game – Tuesday, July 8 and Tuesday, July 22. Groups will contact the Bats office directly to sign up for the program and each group member will get a voucher for a ticket, hot dog, and soft drink. Examples include mentoring organizations, social service agencies, and many more. This program is not intended for individual constituent distribution.

METRO COUNCIL MONDAYS:  

  • For this program, the Bats will host groups and organizations doing the good of the community that might not fit into the category above. This includes 12,000 total ticket vouchers – without hot dogs and drinks – distributed for use on ANY of these designated Monday nights: June 2, June 16, July 7, July 21 and August 4. Groups are able to choose their own date within these Monday nights. Examples include school fundraisers, charity auctions, and several others. This program is also not intended for individual constituent distribution.

 

To request tickets for either part of the program, organizations should contact Kate McGuire, Louisville Bats – kmcguire@batsbaseball.com. Please include your Metro Council District, organization name, contact name, mailing address, daytime phone number, and number of tickets requested. Email is preferred, but if email is not available, call Kate McGuire at 502-614-4535.  


Public Meeting for Hubbard’s Lane Project

There will be another Hubbards Lane Project public meeting to update the public on recent progress in the project plans and listen to your comments and answer questions. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 29, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Trinity High School Cafeteria, 4011 Shelbyville Road.

Louisville's Bike to Work Day Celebration is taking place on Friday, May 30, 2014 rain or shine! They’ll be celebrating the bike at 4th Street Live at Noon.  Get started now by registering to participate, it's free!

Here's what you need to know:  

 

  1. They're giving away a free bike from Parkside Bikes!
  2. There are events going on all month long, sponsored by Bicycling for Louisville, the local bike advocacy organization.
  3. Never biked to work before?  Don't worry; Bicycling for Louisville will help you learn how.
  4. They're meeting at 5 different locations around town to bike to work together on Friday, May 30th.

Thursday, May 22: Carmichael's Bookstore, 2720 Frankfort Avenue, welcomes poet Richard Boada for a reading from his new collection of poems The Error of Nostalgia and Bellarmine University professor and poet, Frederick Smock at 7:00 p.m. Smock is the author of six collections of poetry including The Bounteous World. 

Saturday, May 24: Flags4Vets 7th Annual Flags4Vets National Memorial Day Vigil will take place at Noon at Waterfront Park. Co-hosting this event, with Flags4Vets, will be Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, and Congressman John Yarmuth, both long-time supporters of Flags4Vets and of many other patriotic causes. This event is open to everyone. Following the ceremony, volunteers will begin placing 15,000 grave flags, one-by-one, spelling out USA in a 170 by 450 foot pattern. The project is expected to be completed by nightfall. It is not necessary to sign up or register to volunteer.

Saturday, May 24: Wildflower Strolls with Patricia Haragan, author of the field guide to plants in Louisville's Olmsted Parks, will lead a stroll while identifying wildflowers and discussing their history and folklore.  This walk will be in Cherokee Park starting at the Ledge Road parking lot, off Lexington Road. Each walk begins at 1 pm and lasts approximately 2 hours. Registration is $15 (reduced fee of $10 for members of the Nature Center or the Parks Conservancy), and advanced sign up is required. Monday, May 26: Mayor's Healthy Hometown Subway Fresh Fit Hike, Bike and Paddle event on Memorial Day at Waterfront Park - Great Lawn.  Participate in a 15 mile bike ride, 5k walk or 3 mile paddle.  FREE t-shirts for the event while supplies last.  Go Green and bring your own water bottles!   This is the tenth year for the events, which are held each Memorial Day and Labor Day. The events are part of the city’s Healthy Hometown Movement, created to encourage Louisville residents to be more active and make healthier lifestyle choices.
