DISTRICT 25 NEEDS  AT LEAST

3 BRIGHTSIDE CHAMPIONS!

This is a great volunteer opportunity for High School and College Students to take an active role working to better their community!

This volunteer opportunity only requires a few hours of work over 4 dates throughout the year!  It would make a great resume booster but also be a great for you own individual pride!

Any one interested please email brian.boles@louisvilleky.gov!

brightside

A new initiative, One Bright City, is seeking to to engage citizens throughout the city to keep their neighborhoods clean and partner in planting more trees throughout the city.

There is an excellent volunteer opportunity available for those willing to give time to help keep District 25 litter-free. You can be part of the District 25 Brightside Champion team, a group of 6 people who will assess some of the worst littered spots in District 25. This is a great way for anyone in our District to become an active member in our community and add an important portion to their resume!

The assessments will be done quarterly throughout the year and will provide a clearer map to Brightside and city groups on where efforts and resources need to be directed.

Please contact the District 25 office as soon as possible to let us know if you're interested in this opportunity to make a real difference in the D25 community. Call 574-1125 or email brian.boles@louisvilleky.gov with questions or to apply for this position.

Colonial Gardens Update!

cg

Councilman David Yates and Louisville Metro officials have reached a deal with Underhill Associates to convert the historic Colonial Gardens property across from Iroquois Park into a development anchored by locally owned businesses such as restaurants and coffee shops.

The city will give the property to Underhill for $1 and contribute an additional $1.2 million toward the construction of 16,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space, said Jeff Mosley of the Louisville Metro Department of Economic Growth & Innovation. The development agreement will be signed early next week, he said.

Colin Underhill, a partner in Underhill Associates, said no tenants have been signed, but ideas include "a beer-garden type atmosphere" with a shared patio and restaurants such as a breakfast café, sushi, pizza or ice cream. A major goal is to bring independent, local businesses to South Louisville, he said.

The Honorary Chairman for this year's scramble is Coach Denny Crum!

There is still room for additional teams or players to join in!  Fee for a team of four players is $400, individual player is $100.  Hole sponsorship is $100 and donations of any new item suitable for door prizes are welcome.  Proceeds from the scramble go toward assistance to the needy residents of South Louisville.

Alcohol Awareness Month

"Help for Today. Hope For Tomorrow"

Alcohol Awareness – The Key to Community Change, Personal and Family Recovery
28 Years of Improving and Saving Lives Through Prevention, Treatment and Recovery

Each April since 1987, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) sponsors NCADD Alcohol Awareness Month to increase public awareness and understanding, reduce stigma and encourage local communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol-related issues. This April, NCADD highlights the important public health issue of underage drinking, a problem with devastating individual, family and community consequences.

With this year's theme, "Help for Today, Hope for Tomorrow," the month of April will be filled with local, state, and national events aimed at educating people about the treatment and prevention of alcoholism. Local NCADD Affiliates as well as schools, colleges, churches, and countless other community organizations will sponsor a host of activities that create awareness and encourage individuals and families to get help for alcohol-related problems.

Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous—both to themselves and to society, and is directly associated with traffic fatalities, violence, suicide, educational failure, alcohol overdose, unsafe sex and other problem behaviors. Annually, over 6,500 people under the age of 21 die from alcohol-related accidents and thousands more are injured.

Additionally:

  • Alcohol is the number one drug of choice for America's young people, and is more likely to kill young people than all illegal drugs combined.
  • Each day, 7,000 kids in the United States under the age of 16 take their first drink.
  • Those who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who begin at age 21.
  • More than 1,700 college students in the U.S. are killed each year—about 4.65 a day—as a result of alcohol-related injuries.
  • 25% of U.S. children are exposed to alcohol-use disorders in their family.
  • Underage alcohol use costs the nation an estimated $62 billion annually.

Reducing underage drinking is critical to securing a healthy future for America's youth and requires a cooperative effort from parents, schools, community organizations, business leaders, government agencies, the entertainment industry, alcohol manufacturers/retailers and young people.

"Underage drinking is a complex issue," says Greg Muth, chairperson of the NCADD Board of Directors, "one that can only be solved through a sustained and cooperative effort. As a nation, we need to wake up to the reality that for some, alcoholism and addiction develop at a young age and that intervention, treatment, and recovery support are essential for them and their families," says Muth. "We can't afford to wait any longer."
