Tickets are going fast for our largest family-friendly event, ThunderBlast! This year's activities include an outdoor sports area where families can play a game of mini-golf or try their hand at a gigantic game of shuffleboard. But wait, that isn't the only super-sized board game we'll be playing… get ready for larger-than-life board games like KerPlunk and Jenga! And of course, Science Center Educators will be performing explosive demonstrations both indoors and outdoors throughout the day... CycLouVia On Frankfort Ave. -- This Sunday!
A two-mile stretch of Frankfort Ave., from Pope St. to Stiltz Ave., will be become a linear park this Sunday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. during Louisville’s latest CycLouVia open streets event. Walk, bike, skate, shop, or just hang out. See details. Also, please bring shoes to donate for WaterStep to help fund clean water around the world. Volunteer Efforts Will Impact the Community
During Give A Day Week of Service
Volunteers still needed for many projects, April 12-20
LOUISVILLE (April 10, 2014) – Volunteers will build 200 beds for school students without one. Firefighters and other volunteers will rebuild three abandoned homes for needy families. A new garden will be built at a West Louisville school and stuffed animals will be sorted and tagged for children who have survived a crisis Those and hundreds of other projects and initiatives will be happening during the annual Give A Day week of community service, April 12-20, which begins the day of Thunder Over Louisville and helps launch the 2014 Kentucky Derby Festival.
Mayor Greg Fischer’s goal for the week is to break Louisville’s existing “world record” for caring and helping – with at least 120,000 volunteers and acts of compassion.
The week will start with a gigantic cleaning and brightening of the city, when nearly 9,000 volunteers will help Brightside with cleanups in hundreds of neighborhoods, schools and parks Sat., April 12.
Volunteers are still needed for more than 100 projects of all kinds. To register, go to the website: www.mygiveaday.com and click on “volunteer for an existing project”. Groups and individuals can use the same website to report projects and good deeds they do on their own.
For those who can’t volunteer time, many giving opportunities are available Give A Day week including:
- Donating shoes to WaterStep at locations throughout the city. The shoes help fund providing clean drinking water around the world;
- Donating a backpack to help a needy student. Backpacks can be dropped off at any public or private golf course through April 15;

Donations to help plant and maintain trees in Louisville. Donate online at www.louisvilleky.gov/brightside;
- Buy a $10 Simply Give card at local Meijer stores on April 12 and your donation will be triple matched;
- Dropping cans of food into Dare to Care bins at local Kroger stores.

- April 13, 2 p.m.-6 p.m. –- Shoe Collection Drive for WaterStep at the CyLouVia. People participating in the open street CyLouVia event on Frankfort Ave. will bring shoes for WaterStep. Donated shoes help fund the organizations efforts to provide clean water around the world. Collection bins will be located at stores and locations between Stilz Ave. and Pope St.
- April 14, 10 a.m. (Mayor Fischer) – Build A Bed Delivery to students and families. Some of the 200 beds built by volunteers Sat. April 12 will be delivered to Cochran Elementary School, 500 W. Gaulbert Ave. Contact: Ben Langley, 338-3317.
- April 14, 1:30 p.m. (Mayor Fischer) -- Build A Garden at Roosevelt Perry Elementary School. Volunteers with the PGA will build the school’s first ever garden to help supply fresh produce for school lunches. Contact: Steve McMillen, 779-0986.
- April 14, 5-6:30 p.m. – Volunteers of America Family Emergency Shelter. Volunteers from Texas Roadhouse will serve dinner to shelter residents – then volunteers with the Indian Professional Council will organize a Family Fun Night for the families and children. 1321 S. - April 15, 9:30 a.m. – Bears on Patrol/Kosair Charities. Kosair Charities has collected thousands of stuffed animals to provide to local and state police, sheriff’s office and others to place in their patrol cars for children who are in accidents, crimes or other upsetting situations. April 18, 10:15 a.m. (Mayor Fischer) -- Fuller Center for Housing/Youthbuild. Will turn over the keys to an abandoned home that has been renovated to a needy family that has been its own “sweat equity” into the home – location TBD. Volunteers who helped rebuild the home included a team from Louisville’s YouthBuild organization and Louisville Firefighters. The Fuller Center takes abandoned and boarded-up properties and turns them into usable homes. Fuller Center volunteers are working on two other homes during GAD week.
