Upcoming Junk Pick Up and River Metals Incentives

The 9th District Urban Services District (USD) will have junk collection set-out on a select weekend in March 2014, depending on your address.  You may begin setting out your junk Friday afternoon prior to your junk pick-up week and must have it all out by Monday at 6:00 AM.  For your specific junk set-out weekend please visit http://mapit.louisvilleky.gov/ and enter your address, call the office at 574-1109, or email Kyle Ethridge.  For collection guidelines please visit www.louisvilleky.gov/solidwaste. RMR

From Monday, March 24 – Saturday, March 29, to correspond with Junk Pick Up dates, River Metals Recycling (RMR) is inviting 9th District Residents to receive higher rates for recycling scrap metal: an extra $10 per net ton for sheet metal/appliances and 5 cents per pound extra for aluminum cans and copperTo participate, print the coupon attached to this email and bring your scrap metal to RMR at 2045 River Road between March 24-29.  Thanks to RMR for offering this incentive and for its support of the Green Triangle.  Go green with RMR and get your green!  Keep metal out of the landfill by taking it to River Metals to be recycled instead of setting it out for Junk Pick Up.

Tax Preparation Appointments Now Available

My office is partnering with the Louisville Asset Building Coalition (LABC) to provide FREE VITA tax preparation services in February/March 2014.  Call our office today to sign up for a FREE tax preparation appointment.  This service is for individuals/families who earned $52,000 less in adjusted gross income in 2013.  If you received income from the sale of your home, own rental property OR received $10,000 in cash in self-employment and $5,000 in expenses you are not eligible for this FREE tax service.   FREE tax preparation will be offered on Friday February 28, March 14 and 28 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at United Crescent Hill Ministries, located at 150 S State Street.  Call 574-1109 today to make an appointment!  *UPDATE: Currently we only have appointments for March 28*

World Affairs Council Diplomat Series

March’s topic is Foreign Aid: Does It Work? Featuring Former Ambassador to Jamaica, Ghana and Benin - The Honorable Pamela Bridgewater on Tuesday, March 4 at Vincenzo's Italian Restaurant, 150 South Fifth Street.  11:30 a.m. - Registration begins and lunch and presentation from Noon – 1:30 p.m.  Cost is $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Pamela Bridgewater was appointed to serve as the Ambassador to Jamaica in 2010, retiring only earlier this year. Prior to her work in Jamaica, she served as an ambassador in Ghana from 2005-2008, lead the U.S. delegation to Liberian Peace Talks during the 2003 civil war in that country and was the Ambassador to Benin from 2000-2002. During the intense negotiations leading up to the end of apartheid in South Africa, she was the political officer assigned to cover Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress.

New Opportunity for High School Students!

Olmsted

Olmsted Parks Conservancy would like to announce an exciting new opportunity for high school students!  Their Junior Park Steward program offers a hands-on learning experience for high school students 14-18 years of age. Junior Park Stewards will gain valuable knowledge about conservation, park history, and horticulture from Conservancy staff and trained Park Steward volunteers. Following completion of the June program Junior Park Stewards will be asked to volunteer 16 hours by the end of the calendar year.

 

The program will be offered Tuesdays -Thursdays from 8:00 am-12:00 pm June17-July 10.  Eight students will be accepted into the program via a competitive application process. Pace Car Program Available in the 9th District!

The Pace Car Program is a citizen-based traffic calming initiative that encourages residents to take responsibility for their own driving while setting the "pace" for safer streets and neighborhoods.  Residents will be able to sign an official Pace Car registration form and pledge the following:

 

“Drive the speed limit on city streets, especially in residential areas, setting the pace for vehicles behind me; stop completely at STOP signs and don’t run red lights; be courteous to all bicyclists; pedestrians and other motorists; give myself enough travel time so that I am not sacrificing safety or courtesy; devote my full attention to driving by avoiding distractions, i.e.: cell phones; not be pressured by the impatience of other drivers to exceed the speed limit; keep my sense of humor, life’s too short to let driving stress my out!; and display the Metro Pace Car Program decals or bumper stickers.”

 

By signing this pledge you will receive an official Pace Car bumper sticker or car window sticker to display on your vehicle.  The sticker will alert other drivers that they are taking part in the citizen-based effort to address the problems of traffic speed and safety.

Friday, February 28: Historic Frankfort Avenue will host the February F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop from 6:00pm to 10:00pm.  To celebrate the kick-off of the NCAA Tournament, Frankfort Ave will host special “Show Your Team Colors” Trolley Hop.  The F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop, held year-round on the final Friday of every month, provides FREE parking and transportation to participating shops, restaurants and galleries along the Frankfort, Mellwood and Story Avenue corridor.  For more information please visit www.fatfridayhop.com  

  • Bourbon’s Bistro, 2255 Frankfort Avenue, open house from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.  Join us on Friday, February 28th, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm for an open house. Bourbons Bistro is excited to showcase their newly acquired upstairs space featuring two large private rooms.  Four Roses will provide guests with a drink demonstration and samples. The event is free to the public.

  • Spot5 Art Gallery, 2005 Frankfort Avenue, will host an artist reception from 6:00pm-9:00pm for the current exhibition, “In the Garden with the Beast: An Exploration in Clay” by Molly Uravitch. The show runs through March 1st. The gallery will also host a ‘make your own basketball medallion’ station where guests can make medallions into basketballs or team logos of their favorite team.
  • Varanese Restaurant, 2106 Frankfort Avenue, will host live jazz music and F.A.T. Friday drink specials.

Friday, February 28: The Museum of the American Printing House for the Blind (APH), located at 1839 Frankfort Avenue, will offer two free performances of The Curious Savage, Friday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 1 at 1:00 pm.  In readers theater there are no costumes or sets.  The actors do not memorize lines, but sit together on stage and read from the script—using vocal expression to help the audience understand the story.  In this instance, most of the readers are blind and read from scripts embossed in braille.   The event is free, but space is limited, so reservations must be made by February 27. Call 899-2213 or send email to kcarpenter@aph.org to make a reservation. The program is best for adults and children 12 and up.

Saturday, March 1: Bingham Park volunteer opportunity from 10:00 a.m. – Noon.  Bingham Park is located on Coral Avenue off Frankfort Avenue.  Cleanups are scheduled the 1st Saturday of every month.  Please note these dates are subject to cancellation due to weather. Saturday, March 1:  Carmichael’s Bookstore – 2720 Frankfort Ave – welcomes Appalachian poet Jim Webb for a reading from his new collection of poetry Get In, Jesus at 4:00 p.m. Webb has been an instrumental member of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative since its founding in 1974 and his work has appeared widely in the region’s literary journals. Sunday, March 2: Carmichael’s Bookstore – 2720 Frankfort Ave – will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Read Across America Day at 4:00 p.m. It wouldn’t be a party without cake, crafts, games and a sing-along. Sunday, March 2: West African guitarist Habib Koité will perform at the Clifton Center at 7:00pm.
