Rebuilding the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan

Tax prep

Typhoon Haiyan, the deadliest typhoon in Filipino history, hit the island country on November 8, leaving 6,000 people dead, nearly 2,000 more missing, and millions displaced from their homes. Supplies Over Seas (SOS) volunteer Manny Tipgos recently travelled home to the Philippines. While there, he saw the effects of the typhoon—finding that hospitals in and around Tacloban, the city that bore the brunt of the storm, were as devastated as the rest of the community.

SOS wants to do their part in rebuilding the Philippines by sending a container of medical supplies and equipment. They will be working with state-sanctioned NGO partners that Manny met while in the Philippines in order to ensure that the donated materials we send are effectively distributed to clinics and hospitals where they will be immediately useful.

Please plan to attend an event on Saturday, February 22 from Noon – 2:00 p.m. at Supplies Over Seas, 1500 Arlington Ave, to hear presentations from members of our community who are already working hard to provide relief to the Philippines, and you will learn how you can be a part of this important work.  Visitors will enjoy a light lunch, music, and conversation, and be given the chance to tour the SOS warehouse—where each month volunteers convert 12,000 pounds medical surplus into materials that deliver health and hope to communities in need around the globe. Every $1 you donate toward to this project will allow SOS to provide the Philippines with more than $15 worth of desperately needed medical supplies and equipment—making this a very cost-effective way to deliver relief to a community that desperately needs it.

Pace Car Program Available in the 9th District!

Pace Car Sticker

The Pace Car Program is a citizen-based traffic calming initiative that encourages residents to take responsibility for their own driving while setting the "pace" for safer streets and neighborhoods.  Residents will be able to sign an official Pace Car registration form and pledge the following:

“Drive the speed limit on city streets, especially in residential areas, setting the pace for vehicles behind me; stop completely at STOP signs and don’t run red lights; be courteous to all bicyclists; pedestrians and other motorists; give myself enough travel time so that I am not sacrificing safety or courtesy; devote my full attention to driving by avoiding distractions, i.e.: cell phones; not be pressured by the impatience of other drivers to exceed the speed limit; keep my sense of humor, life’s too short to let driving stress my out!; and display the Metro Pace Car Program decals or bumper stickers.”

By signing this pledge you will receive an official Pace Car bumper sticker or car window sticker to display on your vehicle.  The sticker will alert other drivers that they are taking part in the citizen-based effort to address the problems of traffic speed and safety.

To sign up for this program please click here to download the Official Pledge Form.  Read, sign and date the form and return it to our office.  Please indicate if you would prefer a bumper or window sticker for the program.
