Cycling Organizations to Share Plans for 2014

Bike Kick Off

Representatives of several Louisville bicycling organizations will give presentations about existing programs and exchange ideas for new bicycling initiatives at the 2014 Bike Kick Off. The event is sponsored by the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement (Bike Louisville) and Bicycling for Louisville, the city's non-profit bike advocacy organization. Many regional bike groups, including the Louisville Bicycle Club (LBC), the Kentucky Mountain Bike Association (KyMBA), and the University of Louisville's Sustainability Council will be there as well. The 2014 Bike Kick Off will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, at the Clifton Center located at 2117 Payne St. The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend. For additional information contact Chris Glasser at 558-0941 or Rolf Eisinger at 574-6473.

Online Tree Tracker to Register Planted Trees

Brightside

It’s now easy for individuals and organizations to help Louisville reach its goal of planting 10,000 new trees – with a new tree tracker tool available on the city’s website. The tool can help citizens, organizations and local businesses in coordinating tree planting.  The tree tracker can be found at www.louisvilleky.gov/brightside

The Tree Advisory Commission, created by Mayor Greg Fischer in 2011, is working with the city to help raise funds to plant more trees and is also supporting public/private partnerships to leverage tree planting with citizens and organizations. The commission’s technical advisory committee has also contributed to the city’s efforts to undertake a comprehensive tree canopy assessment, which will begin in 2014.

Trees are a vital portion of a city’s green infrastructure. When placed appropriately, a tree will assist in decreasing storm water runoff, reducing urban heat and minimizing disturbances caused by wind, dust, and noise. Trees also help the city reduce its carbon footprint and improve air quality, which in turn increases the quality of life in Louisville.

Next Year Plant a Christmas Tree

christmas tree

Make a lasting impact by purchasing a Christmas tree that you can plant.  It is easy to maintain a live Christmas tree for a short period of time indoors that can then be permanently planted outside for future enjoyment by following these simple steps:

  1. Select a tree that has root system in bag (B/B-bagged and burlapped).
  2. Acclimate the tree to be inside by leaving it in the garage 3-4 days.
  3. Select a spot inside your house that is not in direct sunlight or next to a heat source (air vent or fireplace).
  4. Protect your floor by placing the root ball in a large pan or on top of a tarp.
  5. Decorate away but remember it is better for the tree no to experience heat from light bulbs so LED lights are a better choice for decoration.
  6. Keep the root ball of the tree moist but not soaked.  Using ice cubes to water the tree is very effective since they slowly melt and water the tree.
  7. The tree should only be kept in the house from 7-14 days.
  8. When ready to move outside you will need to acclimate the tree for outdoor conditions for a few days again.
  9. When ready, plant your tree.

Sustainability Tip – Challenge Yourself with a Green Resolution

For 2014, set a green resolution.  Pick any area of your life that you would like to make greener.  No resolution is too small: each action we take to live more sustainably makes a difference.  Below are some ideas for a green resolution.

  • Take reusable bags to the store with you
  • Set a radius around your home in which you will only bike, walk, or take public transportation.  (For instance, 1 mile)
  • Pledge to integrate local produce into your buying this year
  • Stop buying bottled water.  Use a reusable bottle and fill it with Louisville Pure Tap.
  • Pledge to be idle free (if you’re going to be in your stopped car for longer than 10 seconds, turn off the engine).  Learn more from KAIRE.

Do you have a green resolution for 2013?  If so, share it on the Green Triangle’s Facebook page.
