The Clifton McDonald’s on lower Brownsboro Road, 2314 Brownsboro Road, celebrated their official grand re-opening on Tuesday, August 27, 2013. WorldFest, one of the region’s largest international festivals, will span the entire Labor Day weekend for its 11th year as it grows to four days of international food, music, dance and culture on Louisville’s Belvedere downtown. Exciting international music will come from more than 50 bands and performers while more than 30 food vendors and nearly 150 booths provide a global sampling of cuisine and culture. Admission to WorldFest is free all four days. Hours are: Friday, Aug. 30, Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1, 11 a.m. – 11 p.m., and Monday, Sept. 2, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. The festival includes a colorful Parade of Cultures at noon on Saturday and a naturalization ceremony Friday at 2 p.m. where nearly 300 immigrants will become full U.S. citizens. People are encouraged to bring canned goods to benefit Dare to Care Food Bank. Collection bins will be at the main entrance and in the World of Discovery children’s area. Thousands of people will hit the streets and the Ohio River Labor Day as cyclists, walkers, canoeists and kayakers turn out for the 18th Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Subway Fresh Fit Hike, Bike &Paddle Sept. 2 at Waterfront Park. Paddlers will have two options at the event. At 10 a.m., they can take a 3-mile course up the Ohio River to Beargrass Creek following the channel along Towhead Island. A more adventurous course at 11 a.m. will take canoeists and kayakers through the McAlpine Locks and Dam to the Jaycees Boat Ramp in New Albany. For cyclists, a 15-mile route will leave Waterfront Park and go west to Shawnee Park, one of Louisville’s signature Olmsted-designed Metro Parks. Turnoffs will provide cycling routes as short as two miles. The hiking route, which is wheelchair-accessible, will take walkers west along the Riverwalk and wharf to the Belvedere Connector and through portions of downtown. Walkers can bring their dogs on the hike, but must keep them on a leash and pick up waste as required by law.
Both the cycling and walking routes will be marked with signage and will have plenty of water stops. The Louisville Bicycle Club is providing “bike captains” to help cyclists obey the rules of the road. “Bike doctors” will be in Waterfront Park before the ride and along the route to assist cyclists with any equipment problems. Louisville Metro Police will provide traffic assistance at key intersections and the Louisville Metro EMS bicycle team will patrol the route. A healthy marketplace with nutritional snacks, free children’s activities and informational booths begins at 8:30 a.m. at Waterfront Park. Free T-shirts will be available for the first 3,000 participants and the Brain Injury Association will distribute 500 helmets to riders who don’t have one. Participants are encouraged to be “green” and bring their own water bottles which they can fill in Waterfront Park through the Louisville Water Pure Tap To Go program. LG&E will be working in the Clifton Heights neighborhood in the next few weeks to start the gas main replacement. Please click here to view the map of the targeted areas in Clifton Heights. The project has three stages for each street: Stage 1, crews will install a new polyethylene natural gas main line system; Stage 2, crews will replace individual national gas service lines and if necessary move the customer’s meter outside; Stage 3, crews will restore the disturbed streets and sidewalks. In the past few years, the World Affairs Council of America (WACA) national office has offered up to 25 scholarships for college students in member council cities/states to attend the national conference. This year the conference will be held from Nov.13-15, 2013, in Washington, DC. For more information about the conference, click here.

The Pace Car Program is a citizen-based traffic calming initiative that encourages residents to take responsibility for their own driving while setting the "pace" for safer streets and neighborhoods. Residents will be able to sign an official pace car registration form and pledge the following:
“Drive the speed limit on city streets, especially in residential areas, setting the pace for vehicles behind me; stop completely at STOP signs and don’t run red lights; be courteous to all bicyclists; pedestrians and other motorists; give myself enough travel time so that I am not sacrificing safety or courtesy; devote my full attention to driving by avoiding distractions, i.e.: cell phones; not be pressured by the impatience of other drivers to exceed the speed limit; keep my sense of humor, life’s too short to let driving stress my out!; and display the Metro Pace Car Program decals or bumper stickers.”
By signing this pledge you will receive an official pace car bumper sticker or car window sticker to display on your vehicle. The sticker will alert other drivers that they are taking part in the citizen-based effort to address the problems of traffic speed and safety.

On September 30, 2013, at Noon the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana will host its 24th Annual Golf Tournament. Louisville’s community leaders will converge on the greens of Woodhaven Country Club for an exciting day of competition with friends and colleagues. This event is open to all friends of Girl Scouting. Participants will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy a day of golf while entertaining clients, rewarding employees or networking with fellow business contacts from the community. The tournament will include a silent auction, door prizes and challenging holes of golf. All proceeds from this event benefit Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, which serves over 19,000 girls and supports almost 7,000 volunteers in 64 counties throughout central and western Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Thursday, September 5: Mayor Greg Fischer invites you to a free monthly series showcasing local musicians, artists and performers. The Mayor’s Music and Art Series is the first Thursday of the month in the Mayor’s Gallery, 4th floor of Metro Hall, 527 W. Jefferson St. The next show features The Bibelhauser Brothers. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with music at 12:10 p.m. Brown-bag lunches will be permitted, but due to the historic nature of the Mayor’s Gallery, no outside drinks will be allowed.
