Unfortunately segregation was still a very real thing in many southern states. Railroad tracks on the base divided white residents from the training camp for African American troops. The black recruits were not allowed to enter the main base of nearby Camp Lejeune unless they were accompanied by a white Marine. By 1945, all drill instructors and many NCOs at Montford Point were African Americans. Between 1942 and 1949, more than 20,000 men were trained at Montford Point. 

In July of 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed an executive order, which required the desegregation of the military. Many Montford Point Marines were leaders in the American civil rights movement. The sacrifice of these men paved the way for other minorities and all women to be integrated into the Marine Corps. By their sacrifice, Montford Point Marines engineered social and cultural change in the Marine Crops that created lasting impact and has contributed to the success of the Marine Corps today. 

On November 23, 2012, the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to the Montford Point Marines. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian honor bestowed by Congress for distinguished achievement. This award recognizes the Montford Point Marines' contributions to the Marine Corps and the wider American Society. The Certificate of Recognition was created and awarded by the Commandant of the Marine Corps to recognize the work and sacrifice of those Marines worthy of such distinction. 

District 7 wishes to congratulate Mr. Churchill on this incredible honor, but most importantly we thank him for his service and his commitment, along with the other Montford Point Marines, to make this country the home of the free for ALL of it's citizens. 

Work to begin on Washburn Quiet Zone

CSX engineering will begin work on the Washburn Lane crossing in early September. This date coincides with other production work in the area.  The crossing and road way will be shut down for 5 days as crews make safety improvements to the crossing and the roadway to comply with the safety features needed to meet quiet zone requirements.  Councilwoman Leet also secured $85,000 in this fiscal year budget to resurface Washburn Avenue from the crossing to New LaGrange Road. Metro Louisville road crews will come back through to finalize paving later this fall.  Once the crossing improvements are made CSX has 30 days to come into compliance with the quiet zone rules. Lyndon Summer Nights Concert Series- FREE in Robsion Park!  September 20th featured band is DISORIENTED PEDESTRIANS 4:00PM-7:00PM  at Robsion Park Come out and enjoy some "summer night" music as we wrap up our series. We are hosting it again at our beautiful Robsion Park behind the Post Office. Food trucks will be there at 4:00pm. The band will play 4:30pm to 6:30pm.  Parking is available at Robsion Park.
