ONE LOVE LOUISVILLE IN THE LIBRARY!

We have joined up with the Louisville Free Public Libraries to offer activities and programs geared towards reducing violence! We have community conversations, book discussions, film viewings, interviews and panel discussions planned which all aim to expose the truths of violence in the Louisville community-as well as offer resources to help prevent violence. This months issue of the One Love Louisville Newsletter highlights the upcoming activities at the libraries. 

Panel Discussions and Community Conversations

  1. Spotlight Interviews:every Tuesday in June at the Main Library's Centennial Room from 6pm-7:30pm as we share stories of overcoming violence and/or preventing violence.
  2. Youth Conversation-Importance of Youth Voice: All Louisville youth are invited to discuss the need and importance of youth voice in creating long term, wide spread, community changes in response to reducing violence and exposure to violence. Conversation taking place at the Highlands-Shelby Park Library on June 10th, 3pm-4pm. 
  3. What book helped you "Be the One"?: Join us for a conversation about book that have had an impact on your life. You don't have a book...that's okay, let's talk about the people, activities and/or experiences that influenced you the most. Conversation taking place at the Newburg Library on June 11th, 3pm-4pm.  
  4. Panel Discussion-Mentoring Matters: Mentors, mentees, representatives from mentor organizations and programs as well as anyone curious about the effects of mentoring should join the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods team along with the LFPL on June 17th, 6pm-8pm for this dynamic conversation. 
  5. Built Environment Assessment Presentation & Discussion: Young leaders and teen dating violence prevention advocates with the Center for Women and Families' Pact in Action will present their research and findings after completing Build Environment Assessments in two Louisville neighborhoods on Thursday, June 18, 3pm-4pm at the Newburg Library. 

Film Viewings

Prison State

Join us at the Western Library on Monday, June 15th, 5:30-7:30 pm as we watch "Prison State" a documentary that examines one area of our community, Louisville's Beecher Terrace, and follows the lives of four residents as they move in and out of custody, while Kentucky tries breaking that cycle and shrinking its prison state. 

Trigger DVD

We will be viewing "Trigger: The Ripple Effect of Gun Violence" on Saturday, June 20th, 1pm-3pm. This film examines the ripple effect that one shooting has on a survivor, family, community, and society. It is a story told from the perspective of those who have directly impacted and those who are called daily to respond to this ongoing tragedy. 

Young Black Voter

"Young Black Voter" describes the personal journey of filmmaker Lavel White from a disengaged, frustrated youth who occasionally committed petty crimes to a hopeful young adult, actively involved in the political process and community issues. Join us at Shawnee Library on Monday, June 29 at 6pm to watch and discuss this film.  


Book Discussions

Nathan McCalls Make You Wanna Holla

On Saturday, June 6th from 2pm-4pm at the Shawnee Library we will discuss the story of McCall's childhood in a predominately Black neighborhood, an area prone to gang-related activities. The book is set in the late-1900s during McCall's teenage years, when he and his friends were transitioning from naive youth to gangsters. Email us today to pick up your book and start reading! 

The Other Wes Moore

We will be discussing Wes Moore's The Other Wes Moore at the Iroquois Library on Thursday, June 25th, 2:30pm-3:30pm. This is the story of two boys with the same name living in the same city. One grew up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader. The other is serving a life sentence in prison for felony murder. 

Our Happy Time shares the story of two flawed individuals form an unlikely bond in this story of love and forgiveness set in South Korea. One suffered dreadful abuse and neglect as a young child, became schooled in the criminal arts as an adolescent, and ended up a convicted murderer on death row. The other had a privileged childhood, studied art in Paris, and became a college professor. But a traumatic event when she was 15 led her to try to take her own life repeatedly. Come to the Bon Air Library on Wednesday, June 24th at 7pm to discuss this riveting tale!

2015 Cultural Pass Challenge

Cultural Pass

The 2015 Cultural Pass Challenge is here!  The Gheens Foundation, Louisville Metro Government and 30 local art and cultural organizations are thrilled to offer free experiences for our community’s youth. Passes may be picked up at the Louisville Free Public Library starting May 22, 2015.  Passes will be also be available at Metro Parks Community Centers after May 31st. The passes are valid from May 31, 2015 - August 7, 2015. Learn more

2015 Dirt Bowl Tournament!

The Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods is pleased to inform that we are co-sponsoring the 2015 Dirt Bowl Tournament! Dirt Bowl is a basketball tournament that is held in Shawnee Park every summer. The tournament lasts 6+ weeks featuring some of the best basketball talent in the region. Dirt Bowl has been a Louisville tradition for 40+ years.Join in on the opening festivities on Saturday, June 20th...hope to see you there. Learn more

One Love Louisville-Youth Implementation Team

We are excited to announce that we have formed a team of 34 youth and young adults ages 13-23 years old to help lead the implementation of the One Love Louisville Youth Edition Action Plan! Their first meeting will take place this month. Learn more

  • The 13 One Love Louisville goals became active on January 1, 2015.
  • We have begun a 2 month process to create metrics for all 13 goals which is due to be complete by August 1, 2015. 
  • The One Love Louisville Implementation Team has expanded to 13 members for more accurate and efficient review of goal and initiative monitoring.

Youth:

  1. Call one of the hotline numbers or 9-1-1 if you are currently experiencing a violent situation
  2. Ask for a mentor/Talk with a trusted adult
  3. Participate in programs and activities at your school, house of faith, and in your neighborhood
  4. Do not be afraid to ask for help
  5. Act as a role model to your friends and peers

Adults:

  1. Attend training's and information sessions at community organizations; Seek out advice
  2. Serve as a mentor or sign your child up to receive a mentor 
  3. Volunteer with neighborhood beautification projects
  4. Participate in your police divisions community engagement activities
  5. Learn about the signs and risk factors for youth violence.
