TILT Challenge: young artists with a disability experience

tilt challenge logo

The Kennedy Center asks young artists to bring honesty to the table and shift perception through media, video, and creative storytelling.

The mission of the TILT Challenge is to showcase that people are people first - not simply defined by a disability.

Young artists are asked to share their disability experience - in their own life, the lives of others, or by creating fictional characters - through the art of digital media and storytelling.

The TILT Challenge invites middle school, high school, and pre-professional students, ages 13 - 22, from around the world to submit entries.

Submissions must be no more than five minutes in length, and are due May 15, 2015.

Winners will be invited to Washington, D.C., and winning submissions will be showcased at the Kennedy Center the week of July 20-26, 2015.

For more information, and details on how to submit an entry, visit: http://tiltchallenge.org.

Arts Midwest celebrates 30th

arts midwest 1

On July 1, 1985 Arts Midwest was born. Actually, it was created from a merger of two previous organizations, which together cam together to increase efficiencies and maximize new synergies on behalf of the Midwest's cultural community.

Since then, millions of audience members, thousands of artists, arts organizations, and leaders have benefited from Arts Midwest programming throughout the region and the world.

In order to celebrate this significant anniversary, Arts Midwest will be spending the rest of 2015 sharing stories, following up with past partners, speaking with current friends, and asking the public to come along for the ride.

Any real celebration involves food, so over the next few months, Arts Midwest will be pairing some of their past and current success stories with some favorite meals. In the above photo, An Da Union, World Fest ensemble (2008) dine with students in Orange City, Iowa. (Photo by Shigeyo Henriquez

Indiana gallery celebrates 15 year anniversary

art in hand logo

This year Art IN Hand, a cooperative art gallery in Zionsville, Indiana celebrates its 15th anniversary and will mark the occasion with a weekend celebration May 1 - 2, 2015.

Located at the picturesque brick thoroughfare of downtown's Main Street, the gallery will host a special evening event Friday, May 1 from 5 - 8 p.m. The public is invited to tour the gallery, enjoy wine and refreshments, and meet artist members both past and present. The anniversary celebration continues Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

"Art IN Hand was created as a place where artistic talent could be nurtured," says Christine Davis, a raku potter and both a current and founding member. "We were a group of friends who wanted a place where artists could display and sell their work, and wanted to meet our patrons and tell our stories."

Begun in 2000, Art IN Hand was patterned off a successful co-op started by local fiber artist Stephanie Robertson in Charleston, SC. Most of the original members were affiliated with the Indianapolis Art Center, and decided on a Zionsville location since many of them lived on the north side, and the area offered affordable rents.

Art IN Hand is located at 211 S. Main Street. Information on the gallery and its member artists can be found on the gallery website, www.artinhandgallery.com or visit the gallery's Facebook page.

Purdue start-up could change how students practice music
A Purdue start-up has developed a gamified learning management system that is being tested in Indiana high schools and could help music students develop better practice habits and assist teachers in distributing learning materials and announcements through a communications platform. Andrew King, a Purdue University professor and director of orchestras, and Alexander Akagi, a sophomore studying computer science at Purdue, founded Vivaldi Education LLC, a start-up developing a performing arts learning management system for high schools. The system has a portal for instructors to send YouTube videos of the musical pieces the course is working on to the students. Instructors are able to view analytics on who has and hasn't watched the videos, helping to determine student practice habits. Students can also view graphs to see how much they have been practicing and then compare that to the average of the section or the average of the entire orchestra. "We want to make it so students can compete against each other and then eventually, since it is Web-based, have schools competing against other school ensembles," Akagi said. Senate draft education act has flaws in arts funding
Earlier this month the Senate released its draft of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), entitled Every Child Achieves Act. The Senate version is considered by arts education advocates to be better than the House version, released earlier this year. According to Americans for the Arts (AFTA) the Senate draft retains the arts as a core academic subject and keeps in place important eligibility criteria to support all core academic subjects, including arts education. However, the Senate draft still eliminates the only dedicated arts in education program that has funded more than 200 model grant programs and it also eliminates the 21st Century after-school learning programs, which support arts education. The Senate was expected to continue debating the draft before the end of the month. (source: AFTA)
