Chairman Chu on arts education

nea logo

In a recent blog post, National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Dr. Jane Chu addressed the importance of arts education and the contribution it makes to providing high-quality educational opportunities.

"A Perfect Place to Start: Arts in Education," Chairman Chu points out that the real goal of NEA funding of arts education projects is less about teaching art skills, and more about providing "academic equity, so that every student is engaged, empowered, and equipped with the tools necessary for success."

Dr. Chu points to multiple studies that have shown the benefits of arts education, and explains why decision makers should not view arts education as "an extra."

Eleven students win national art and writing recognition

Eleven students from Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan will be honored in New York City in June for their achievements in art and writing.

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers recently announced the national winners of the 2015 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the country's longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative students in grades 7 - 12. Eleven of those winners are from Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan.

Student's works were blindly judged, first at the South Bend Museum of Art, the local affiliate of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, and then nationally by panels of judges comprised of renowned artists, authors, educators, and arts professionals.

"The Scholastic Art Awards are especially important given the state of art education in our country today," said Candie Waterloo, South Bend Museum of Art Curator of Education. "The Awards are one of the few opportunities to recognize the talented young artists who ultimately are our next generation of creative thinkers. In recognizing their achievements, the Awards nourish esteem, foster intellect, and build confidence."

Bloomingtion Playwrights Project (BPP) will honor the winners of the 2015 MiniPlay competition during this year's Young Playwrights Showcase.

The Showcase will be 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. April 12, 2015 at the Bloomington Playwrights Project, 107 W. 9th St., Bloomington, Indiana.

Young playwrights from numerous Bloomington elementary, middle and high schools submitted their plays for the MiniPlay contest. BPP selected the top plays for a staged reading by a company of adult actors, bringing the community a production for all supporters of youth theatre.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are a suggested donation of $20 with all proceeds to fund BPP's theatre education program. Tickets are available at the BCT Box Office at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave., Bloomington, Indiana or online at www.newplays.org.
