On Friday, March 6 the Indiana State Library will be hosting a planning meeting for the Indiana Memory - Digital Public Library of America’s (DPLA) Statewide Service Hub.
This meeting is open to all libraries, historical societies, museums and archives who are interested in participating in Indiana Memory and DPLA. To learn more about DPLA, go to the website at http://dp.la
The DPLA is a national discovery tool for public domain and licensed digital content held by the nation's archives, libraries, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions. It is aimed at providing large scale public access to these local depositories. Indiana Memory has been accepted as a service hub for DPLA, providing a way for content from the local organizations to be included in the national database.
The purpose of this meeting is to update the State on our progress, including a report on our initial data upload, and to discuss potential governance models for the new Indiana Memory DPLA Statewide Service Hub. This will include a conversation on the process the State Library has created for getting the existing records ready for harvesting as well as a timeline for adding new collections. The attendees will also discuss a schedule for future meetings and future steps for the group.
The Indiana Memory DPLA Service Hub Planning Meeting will take place on Friday, March 6, 2015 from 1-3 pm in the History Reference Room of the Indiana State Library.
There is no cost for attending this meeting however we ask that participants pre-register at http://tinyurl.com/DPLAIndiana.

There have been a number of questions recently about whether Indiana libraries can sell family non-resident cards.
The short answer is no. Indiana libraries do not have home rule, which means that any action that is not expressly allowed for in the law is not permitted. According to the statute (IC 36-12-2-25) non-resident cards are issued to individuals. That means libraries cannot issue family cards.
The Library Board is required to set the non-resident card fee for the library district's operating fund expenditure per capita in the most recent year or for a minimum of $25, whichever is greater. The board should review this amount annually to insure that it still meets or exceeds that per capita amount, which may change from year to year.
There are a limited number of exceptions to this rule listed in the law. IC 36-12-2-25(d) allows Indiana libraries to issue free or reduced fee non-resident cards to students enrolled in or teachers at a public school corporation or nonpublic school that is located at least in part in the library district and in which students preschool through grade 12 are enrolled. Additionally, the law also allows libraries to issue free or reduced fee non-resident cards to library staff. These free or reduced fee library cards issued to library staff, students, or teachers under IC 36-12-2-25(d) may only be issued to Indiana residents according to IC 36-12-2-25(b). The board must adopt a resolution detailing who within these allowed exceptions are eligible to receive these cards.
Finally, all non-resident cards are required to be the same price for all users, so offering a discounted senior citizen card is not permitted.
If you have questions, please take a look at the text of the law at IC 36-12-2-25 or contact the State Library at statewideservices@library.in.gov or 800-451-6028.
Join Mayor Greg Ballard, Indianapolis Public Library CEO Jackie Nytes and partners in the local international community to announce a shared reading initiative surrounding the book, "The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears" by Dinaw Mengestu, who will join the announcement ceremony via Skype.
“The Big Read” is a national campaign, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, intended to revitalize the role of reading in American culture. Through April 30, IndyPL will host book discussions and related cultural programming that explore the book’s theme.
You are also invited to the free opening reception, featuring the kickoff of a special exhibit, at Central Library on March 11 from 6 – 8 p.m.
