The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federal nutrition program administered by the USDA and the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). The SFSP is designed to meet the needs of low income children in areas where children may have limited access to good nutrition. The program can provide up to two free meals per day to eligible children and youth ages 18 and under.
Some libraries have already established valuable long-lasting partnerships working with the SFSP. According to Lynne Peterman, the Supervisor of Nutrition Processing Center for Fort Wayne Schools, “Fort Wayne Community Schools was approached by Allen County Public Library in 2011 to determine if they could be part of our free summer feeding program. We agreed to work with the libraries that offered a reading program to children throughout the summer months. We started in 2011 with six locations offering free lunches. In 2012, we continued our partnership by expanding the meal service to include both lunch and afternoon snacks. Over the past four years, the participation has increased to serving about 30 – 40 children at each library site. We feel that this is a tremendous benefit to our students who are attending these programs as they get to improve their reading skills while receiving free nutritious meals.”
The same positive feedback is echoed from Shanika Heyward, librarian at the 38th Street Branch of Indianapolis Public Library that partnered with Indy Parks last summer. Shanika states, “We served between 50-100 lunches each weekday last year for a total of 1785 lunches for the summer. It was our first year participating in the program, and I hope we get to do it again. This summer, we will have our volunteers to read stories during their lunchtime in the children's area.”
Katie Springer of the Indiana State Library and Lauri Chandler of the Vigo County Public Library have partnered with IDOE Office of School and Community Nutrition to get more Indiana libraries involved. To get your library involved or find a local sponsor who can work directly with you, contact IDOE SFSP Specialist, Tina Skinner, at (317) 232-0858 or tskinner@doe.in.gov.
