Recently, Newsweek published an article about how the New York Public Library is staying relevant by using innovative ideas to serve the community. Here is a brief clip from the story:
The initiative is “a wonderful way for us to connect with our customers” and help them preserve the tangible things of their memories, says Milbrodt, and a way to help future researchers gain a fuller and deeper understanding of local history.

The Library Development Office would like to thank all 237 public library directors and staff who participated in the 2014 Annual Report for Indiana Public Libraries. Over 97.5% of libraries completed the survey by the February 1st due date.
The information collected in the Annual Report is used in a variety of ways. The contact and hours information will be used to update our statewide directories, and the rest of the statistics will be compiled and uploaded to ISL’s statistics website this spring. Much of the information will also be submitted to the Census in June of 2015 to become part of the FY2014 Public Libraries in the United States Survey dataset. Additionally, the information is used to help determine if libraries have met standards.
We would like to congratulate Director Cindy Hein of Rockville Public Library for being the first to complete the survey on January 2nd!
Marilyn Wood is the new director at Monroe County Public Library following Sara Laughlin’s retirement.

The Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library is gearing up for its 2nd Annual Golf (fore!) the Library fundraising event Saturday, February 7.
The Friends of the Library and the Greene County Literacy Coalition have teamed up with a class of students from the local high school to build the holes that will be used for the event. Ben Helms, the Ag and Sciences teacher, assigned students in one of his classes the project of designing and constructing the holes. Local hardware store, Bloomfield Hardware supplied much of the wood and materials to the class for free or little cost. Other local businesses have sponsored individual holes. As part of their sponsorship, businesses are allowed to decorate their hole with items and goodies from their business to help promote it. All of the money raised from the event will be split between the Friends of the Library and the Literacy Coalition.
In the past, the Indiana State Library has offered grants, subsidies, and statewide trainings through our Children’s Literacy project. This year, we’re letting YOU decide what you need to improve service to children within your library!
The goal of the new 2014-2015 LSTA Children’s Literacy grants is to make funding available for public libraries statewide to enhance their physical spaces for Indiana’s youngest library users (defined as ages 0-17 years). Through these grants, libraries may apply for up to $5,000 for improvements to their children’s and/or YA departments. Grant funds may be used for furnishings (including seating, displays, and shelving), manipulatives, rugs- just about anything it would take to make your library a more welcoming space for children and their caregivers. Projects improving the ability to serve special populations may be given preference.
Examples of items that may be purchased with grant funds include: • Browseable book bins for preschoolers • Seating for story time or study areas • ADA-compliant computer workstations, tables, or seating • Message boards for community and caregiver information • Improved signage and way-finding • Free-standing activity centers • STEM/educational toys and games
Hurry- applications are due February 24th, 2015! These grants are on an expedited time-line and recipients will need to act quickly to complete their contracts and purchasing. LSTA grants are reimbursement grants, and there is a required 10% local cash match (up to $500). Please note- these grants may not be used to pay for staffing, technology, or collection development- the focus is on improving the physical space.
Please read the grant guidelines for complete details about the grants, and contact LSTA Consultant Jen Clifton jclifton@library.in.gov or Suzanne Walker suwalker@library.in.gov if you have any questions.
