Consumer Alert: Indiana Department of Insurance Warns Hoosiers About Potential Scams During Open Enrollment

Protect Yourself from Scams While Applying for Coverage on the Federal Marketplace
Indianapolis – During this open enrollment period, scammers are trying to take advantage of consumers who may have questions or need assistance understanding how to apply for coverage.
Indiana Department of Insurance Commissioner Stephen W. Robertson said, “While it is important for Hoosier consumers to be informed, they need to be alert to potential scams. No one at Healthcare.gov needs your credit card information to help you apply for insurance.”
Imagine that you contact Healthcare.gov to apply for coverage and the person who answers the phone asks you for your contact and credit card information. They tell you they cannot connect you with someone who can help you with the application until they receive the information. Or, you call and the person offers you a $100 rebate voucher for a discount shopping program (if you pay the $1.95 processing fee), or a $100 Walmart gift card. Of course, in order to receive any of this (or help with your application) they tell you again that they must have your contact information and credit card number. Once they receive the information, your call is not transferred and your credit card has been compromised.
How did this scam happen? Pay close attention to the number you are dialing. Scammers set up phone numbers that are very similar to the Healthcare.gov phone number. If you accidently misdial, you may reach one of the scammers. Second, know that when you call Healthcare.gov, they do not require that you to give them your credit card or banking information.
If you suspect a health care scam, report it! Contact the Indiana Department of Insurance at 317-232-2385 or the Indiana Attorney General’s office at 317-232-6330.
If you are applying for coverage on the Federal Marketplace, make sure you call 1-800-318-2596. If you prefer to apply online, visit www.healthcare.gov.
If you need assistance applying for coverage, the Indiana Department of Insurance suggests that you contact a certified Indiana Navigator or licensed insurance agent for assistance.
