Indiana Cities Take On ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ Community Challenge In February of this year, President Obama kicked off the ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ initiative to help young minority males maximize their opportunity for success in our country. Four Hoosier cities have accepted the challenge thus far: Fort Wayne, Gary, Elkhart and Indianapolis. West Side Algebra Scores Rise A good math teacher sends students to the board to do math. A good math teacher helps a student work through the problem. A really good math teacher develops a relationship with the student, that is the teacher and student connect. That's what has happened at the West Side Leadership Academy where freshman students who took the end-of-course assessment in algebra for the first time earlier this year improved their scores from 4 percent to 56 percent passing. 2014 Expungement Forums This year there were revisions made to Indiana’s House Enrolled Act 1482 (aka the ‘Second Chance Law’) and the expungement forums have begun to take place again this year. Michigan City has held two expungement forums already. Gary, South Bend, Indianapolis and Bloomington have expressed interest in expungement forums and are looking to set definitive dates. More…

Indianapolis Urban League Assists With Employment Opportunities The New Beginnings Program is designed to help individuals 18 years of age and older successfully transition from assistance, incarceration, unemployment or underemployment to self-sufficiency. The New Beginnings offers intensive workforce development workshops over a two-week period. After successfully completing the program, participants graduate from the program and receive priority job placement assistance with their preferred employers. More…
