ISL would like to congratulate Suzanne Walker on her recent promotion to Supervisor of the Professional Development Office. Suzanne has been the ISL Children's Services Consultant since October 2012. During her tenure at the ISL Suzanne implemented the Indiana Rock Star Startup Librarian kits, which encourage youth librarians to use guitars and ukuleles during storytime. She has also managed the Pursuit of State Pride fourth grade field trips at the Indiana State Library. She has overseen the programming and class visits of over a thousand fourth grade students to the ISL building.
She has offered training on many topics relevant to youth librarians such as:
- Storytime Boot Camp
- Collaborative Summer Library Program trainings
- Every Child Ready to Read
- Various teen service programs
She has presented numerous times at Indiana Library Federation’s District conferences, annual conferences, and CYPD conferences. She enjoys taking Sammy the interviewing toucan with her to talk to people interested in children’s literature.
Suzanne will remain the Director of the Indiana Center for the Book where she coordinates national writing contests for youth such as Letters About Literature and River of Words.
Before coming to the ISL Suzanne was the Director of Youth Services at the Mooresville Public Library for five years and the Teen Librarian at the Lebanon Public Library for four years. She was the 2011 Chair of the Children's and Young People's Division of the Indiana Library Federation and remains active on the CYPD board.
ALA’s Public Programs Office is now accepting applications for the traveling exhibition “Exploring Human Origins: What Does It Mean to be Human?”, offered in partnership with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.
Visitors will learn how walking upright, creating technology, eating new foods, and the development of symbolic language and complex societies have defined humans throughout the course of history. Selected sites will receive:
- 40-panel, 1,200-square-foot exhibit — including interactive kiosks, hands-on displays, videos, and a display of skulls — to host in their library for four weeks
- Presentation of three or four programs by members of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History Human Origins Program and its Broader Social Impacts Committee
- $500 programming support grant
- Variety of educational materials and support
Nineteen public libraries will be selected to host the exhibit between April 2015 and April 2017.
Learn more about this project and how your library can participate at the ALA Human Origins website. To be eligible you must apply by November 19, 2014.
