Banned Book Week September 21-27, 2014

Banned Book Week

The national book community's Banned Book Week, which celebrates the freedom to read by drawing attention to censorship and open access to information, will be held September 21-27.

If you are looking for a way for your library to celebrate the freedom to read consider joining the Banned Book Week Virtual Read-Out initiative. Participants produce videos in which they discuss the importance of fighting censorship and the values of Banned Book Week. Videos that meet the criteria will be eligible to be featured on the Virtual Read-Out YouTube channel.

For more information on Banned Books Week, check out their  Events and Ideas and Resources web pages.

ISL participated in this year's National Book Festival

National Book Festival

Thanks to a partnership between Ball State University and the Indiana State Library, the Indiana table in the Pavilion of the States at the National Book Festival was a popular stop for thousands of festivalgoers in Washington D. C. on, August 31.  Along with the most popular item, bookmarks, attendees could get all kinds of information on Indiana, including state road maps and brochures for Indiana literary sites like the Gene Stratton Porter historic home, the Garfield Trail, and the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library.  Thousands of children at the festival got their United States map brochures promoting Great State Reads stamped with the iconic Indy 500  checkered flag.  For a few hours at the festival, lucky folks could  meet John Beineke, the author of Indiana’s chosen Great Read, Hoosier Public Enemy:  A Life of John Dillinger.  When asked what he thought of the festival, Beineke answered, “It’s just awesome!”

Suzanne Walker, Director of the Indiana Center for the Book, and LaShelle Bilal, technician with Indiana’s Talking Books division of the Indiana State Library were on the go the entire festival aided with help from Washington D. C.’s Junior League.  By the end of the festival, all  50,000 bookmarks had been given away, every state map had been taken, and Suzanne Walker was still stamping maps a half hour after the event officially closed.  “People love the Drawn to Read bookmarks every year.”  Walker stated.  “They are so colorful, and they are designed by kids for kids.  We had a crush of people at our table the entire festival.”

The Library of Congress puts the free festival together; the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies sent our Indiana representatives.  Be sure to check out the website for upcoming information on the 2015 festival
