"Ahavath Sholom" Marker Dedicated
A large crowd attended the August 31 dedication of the "Ahavath Sholom" State Historical Marker in Ligonier. Tours of the historic synagogue, a silent auction, and celebration with refreshments preceded the dedication. Mother Nature was very kind as the marker was dedicated. Mayor Patty Fisel welcomed over 75 attendees and the Historical Society's director spoke briefly about the building and preservation plans before marker applicant Wendy Soltz took the floor.
Wendy shared a primary source with those gathered, a description of the dedication of the building some 125 years earlier, and a poem written by a young Ligonier resident to celebrate the occasion. You can read the final stanza of that poem and explore the history of Ahavath Sholom in this series on our blog, learn more about preservation efforts at the Ahavath Sholom blog, or visit the Ligionier Historical Society in person and explore the featured exhibit on the history of the synagogue.
