The Indiana State Library is hosting its 9th-Annual Indiana Vision Expo on Saturday, September 27th, from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. This year’s Expo will feature motivational speaker Craig MacFarlane, “The World’s Most Celebrated Blind Athlete” as the keynote speaker. The featured speakers this year are low vision specialists Dr. Richard Windsor and Dr. Laura Windsor of the Low Vision Centers of Indiana who will be giving a presentation on the latest advancements in the treatment of eye diseases. You can view the full schedule of events on the Indiana Vision Expo website. The Expo will also welcome visually-impaired artists from around the state who will be exhibiting their work. Additionally, a wide variety of vendors and non-profit agencies will be on hand providing the latest in adaptive technology, independent living aids, and other resources for Hoosiers with vision loss.
2014 Indianapolis VisionWalk Details
The Vision Expo will again be held in conjunction with the annual Foundation Fighting Blindness Indianapolis VisionWalk, which will be held on the downtown canal adjoining the State Library prior to the start of the Vision Expo. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., and the Walk starts at 9:30 a.m. Visit the VisionWalk homepage for all the race details, or contact Lori Quinn at 1-847-689-0100, or at LQuinn@FightBlindness.org.
Team with Talking Books to Enhance Your Low Vision Services
Indiana libraries also have a way to bring Talking Books services to their local schools and communities by becoming an institutional partner. Libraries with institutional accounts have free access to a rotating deposit collection of up to 60 large print titles to loan to their patrons, and a BARD account and NLS Digital Player. These tools enable libraries to introduce this free service to students and patrons with visual, physical, or learning disabilities that make it difficult to read standard print, as well as educate them on how to use associated assistive technologies like BARD and the digital player. This is also a great, cost-free way to augment your homebound services, even those in unserved areas, as all materials are shipped for free directly to patrons' homes.
Volunteer
The State Library relies on the help of volunteers throughout the year. If you are interested in volunteering for the Vision Expo, or other State Library programs and events, visit the State Library’s volunteer webpage.
Contact Information
Contact the Indiana Talking Book & Braille Library at 1-800-622-4970 or TBBL@library.in.gov for more information about their service or anything mentioned in this article.
