From pre-K-12 education to career and technical training to workforce development, the Center for Education & Career Innovation aims to support the expansion of innovative and highly-effective education and career development initiatives. It's a big task and requires a bold vision for an integrated approach in education and workforce development, which will serve Hoosier children and adults more effectively.

Indiana's 11 Regional Works Councils were awarded just over $3 million for new Innovative Career and Technical Education (CTE) Curricula. The grants are designed to encourage innovative and collaborative career and technical training opportunities for Hoosier students and adults working in conjunction with the eleven regional Works Councils around the state. Several Hoosier businesses partnered to provide more than $4 million in matching funding and in-kind services to expand new approaches toward certifications, dual credits and internship offerings designed to align with local business needs.

The Indiana State Board of Education (SBOE) at its July 9, 2014 meeting established the Committee on School Turnarounds. There are currently nine turnaround academies across the state and four additional schools that may require SBOE intervention in the fall of 2014.
The Committee is charged with initiating a comprehensive review of these interventions, as well as best practices in school turnarounds, that benefit Indiana students, families, educators, schools and communities. The committee will provide recommendations in a final report to the SBOE in November 2014.

Governor Mike Pence announced that Allen, Jackson, Lake, Marion and Vanderburgh counties have been selected for the pre-K pilot program, which will help prepare low-income four-year-olds for success in school. The program funds services delivered via accredited private schools, public schools and community based early education providers who have achieved Level 3 or Level 4 in Paths to QUALITY™, Indiana’s voluntary child care quality rating and improvement system. The Indiana Career Council recently unveiled Align, Engage, Advance: A Strategic Plan to Transform Indiana's Workforce. The strategic plan has three pillars of transformation: system alignment, worker- and student-centric services, and demand-driven programs and investments. 15 to Finish is a campaign of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. The campaign encourages students attending or planning to attend the University's 2- or 4-year campuses to take 15 credits per semester to graduate on time.
August 1 kicks off the formal collective bargaining period for public school districts and teachers and the Indiana Education Employment Relations Board (IEERB) recently sent out a list of reminders to help all parties through the process. In fact, the IEERB was established to promote these cooperative relationships between public school teachers and the school corporations they serve by developing rules and providing guidance.
