From pre-K-12 education to career and technical training to workforce development, the Center for Education & Career Innovation aims to support the expansion of innovative and highly-effective education and career development initiatives. It's a big task and requires a bold vision for an integrated approach in education and workforce development, which will serve Hoosier children and adults more effectively.

Works Councils Receive Over $3M in CTE Grants

Indiana's 11 Regional Works Councils were awarded just over $3 million for new Innovative Career and Technical Education (CTE) Curricula. The grants are designed to encourage innovative and collaborative career and technical training opportunities for Hoosier students and adults working in conjunction with the eleven regional Works Councils around the state. Several Hoosier businesses partnered to provide more than $4 million in matching funding and in-kind services to expand new approaches toward certifications, dual credits and internship offerings designed to align with local business needs.

Earlier this summer, CTE Awareness Initiative Grants were awarded to  Regional Works Councils for up to $65,000 for each region. Click here for a complete listing of grants and summary of projects.

SBOE to Review School Turnarounds, Make Recommendations

SBOE

The Indiana State Board of Education (SBOE) at its July 9, 2014 meeting established the Committee on School Turnarounds. There are currently nine turnaround academies across the state and four additional schools that may require SBOE intervention in the fall of 2014.

The Committee is charged with initiating a comprehensive review of these interventions, as well as best practices in school turnarounds, that benefit Indiana students, families, educators, schools and communities. The committee will provide recommendations in a final report to the SBOE in November 2014.

Five Counties Selected for Pre-K Pilot Program

Governor Mike Pence announced that Allen, Jackson, Lake, Marion and Vanderburgh counties have been selected for the pre-K pilot program, which will help prepare low-income four-year-olds for success in school. The program funds services delivered via accredited private schools, public schools and community based early education providers who have achieved Level 3 or Level 4 in Paths to QUALITY™, Indiana’s voluntary child care quality rating and improvement system. Read more...

A Strategic Plan to Transform Indiana's Workforce

Career Council Adopts Strategic Plan

The Indiana Career Council recently unveiled Align, Engage, Advance: A Strategic Plan to Transform Indiana's Workforce. The strategic plan has three pillars of  transformation: system alignment, worker- and student-centric services, and demand-driven programs and investments.  Each pillar has at least one objective to guide the Council's future work. Mr./Miss Science

Governor Pence Honors Mr./Miss Science

Citing their exemplary academic performance in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classes, and extraordinary extracurricular activities.  Governor Mike Pence honored Avon’s Sonali Mali as 2014 Miss Indiana Science and David Lu Liang of Carmel as 2014 Mr. Indiana Science.

Higher Ed Promotes On-Time Graduation

15 to Finish

15 to Finish is a campaign of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. The campaign encourages students attending or planning to attend the University's 2- or 4-year campuses to take 15 credits per semester to graduate on time.

IEERB Supports Bargaining for Teachers, Schools

IEERB

August 1 kicks off the formal collective bargaining period for public school districts and teachers and the Indiana Education Employment Relations Board (IEERB) recently sent out a list of reminders to help all parties through the process. In fact, the IEERB was established to promote these cooperative relationships between public school teachers and the school corporations they serve by developing rules and providing guidance.

Governor Mike Pence recently announced the following reappointments to the State Board of Education:

Charter School Board Accepting 2014 Applications

Each year, the Indiana Charter School Board (ICSB) invites proposals for quality charter schools seeking to operate in the state of Indiana. The ICSB accepted applications for the current Fall cycle until Aug. 6. After rounds of interviews and public hearings in September, the ICSB will make determinations on future Indiana charter schools.

Could You Build a Better School?

That's the question the Chicago Tribune recently asked during an investigation of best practices to turnaround underperforming local schools. The publication selected the Innovation School Fellowship as a model for innovative school reform. Indianapolis Public Schools partnered on the Fellowship with The Mind Trust, a nonprofit education reform group. The Indiana General Assembly then passed a law allowing the school system to operate Innovation Network Schools. Read the article...
