Governor and First Lady Host 2013 Governor's Arts Awards

An estimated 500 people attended the 2013 Governor's Arts Awards program September 26 at The Palladium in Carmel, Indiana. Gov. Pence and First Lady Karen Pence, honorary chair of the 2013 awards, recognized the artistic accomplishments and contributions of Mark Kruzan, mayor of Bloomington; philanthropist Christel DeHaan; Traditional Arts Indiana; arts educator Cynthia Hartshorn; film producer, director, and actor Sydney Pollack; and signer/songwriter John Hiatt. "The arts offer us the unique experience of seeing through another's eyes," Gov. Pence said in his welcoming remarks. "Whether it be a landscape painting or an abstract sculpture; an opera or a children's choir; a film or a ballet - the arts, in every form, help each of us see the world differently. They help us appreciate another's viewpoint. They help us find a new perspective. They inform, they educate, they enlighten." In addition to the awards presentations, guests were treated to live performances by The Technicians, a show choir from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis; the Not Too Bad Bluegrass Band; Michael Feinstein singing "The Way We Were" as part of a tribute to Sydney Pollack; and three songs performed by John Hiatt. Phoneix Theatre Seeks Hearing Impaired Actors

The Phoenix Theatre in Indianapolis is looking for actors for a specific role in an upcoming production of Tribes.  The play centers around the character of Billy, who is deaf, but is able to speak with the help of an implant. He is surrounded by a family of intellectuals who love to talk, but don't want to listen very well. Billy has never been involved in the deaf community; however this all changes when he meets a young girl, Sylvia, who is losing her hearing. Phoenix is looking to cast Billy. He is in his early 20's. As stated, he is deaf but can speak and be understood with the help of an implant. The actor must be able to sign, as his character learns to sign as the play progresses. Arts Mentoring Publication Now Available

Arts Mentoring and You: A Series of Workshops on How to Get the Most from a Mentor for Emerging Artists, Performers, and Writers with Disabilities is a new training guide available as a free, electronic publication. The guide is authored by Jane Harlan-Simmons, Deborah McCarty and Steve Savage, based on a workshop series presented by South Central ArtsWORK Indiana in the fall of 2012. Artists of all disciplines have increased their artistic or business skills with the guidance of a mentor who has greater knowledge and experience. Artists with disabilities may be less likely to take advantage of such opportunities because of limited access to mentoring relationships and role models. The training series outlined in this guide is designed to acquaint participants with the benefits and responsibilities of being a mentor, how to establish mentoring goals, and how to connect and work with a mentor. What Does ACA Mean for Artists and Small Arts Organizations?

Artisan Holiday Boutique is in indoor art marketplace featuring the work of Indiana artists and artisans within a boutique atmosphere. Works should demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship for holiday gift giving. The boutique is ongoing, but expanded during December. The boutique will be open during the Artisans' Fare on November 22 and 23, 2013 and is expanded in December for Zionsville's Christmas in the Village and the SullivanMunce Cultural Center's Chili Bowl Sale, Bake Sale Saturday and children's activities December 7 & 8. The boutique is open to all artists and artisans 18 years of age and older who exhibit high quality crafts appropriate for holiday gift giving for men, women, children and pets. Phoenix Theatre Seeks Original Holiday Plays, Indianapolis, IN
The Phoenix Theatre is seeking proposals for their annual tradition which they are calling: A Very Phoenix Xmas 8: Angels We Have Heard While High. Holidays could include but not limited to Christmas, New Years, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, Labor Day, Talk Like a Pirate Day, or Hanukkah. The play may be a scene, sketch, short video, movement piece, rant, arty-tone poem, or heartfelt celebration of the season. Call for Entries, Shoebox: An International Sculpture Exhibition, Middle Tennessee State University
Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN extends a call for entries for Shoebox, an exhibition of small 3-D work at the Todd Art Gallery. The juried competition and exhibition will feature small 3-D work designed to fit within the confines of a typical shoebox, with each participant free to use a shoebox of choice, from baby-size shoes to boots, as the dimensions of their work. National Artist Teacher Fellowships, Center for Arts in Education, Boston, MA
The Center for Arts in Education invites art teachers from public arts-focused high schools to apply for funding for artistic development through its National Artist Teacher Fellowship Program. The program offers teachers the opportunity to immerse themselves in their own creative work, interact with other professional artists, and stay current with new practices. The program provides grants of $5,500 to enable selected arts teachers from all disciplines to rejuvenate their own art-making. A complementary grant of $1,500 is awarded to each Fellow's school to support post-fellowship activities in the classroom. Schools must be an arts-focused public, magnet, or charter high school with the primary mission of fostering the development of artistic talent. The 2014 program is now open to art teachers at Title 1 schools grades 6-12 that have demonstrated a commitment to using the arts to improve student engagement and achievement. Applicants must be minimally in their fifth year of teaching arts at the high school level, and plan to continue as an arts teacher in their school for the 2013-2014 school year. Grant Submission Deadline, USArtists International 2014
USArtists International provides support for American dance, music, and theater ensembles and solo artists invited to perform at significant international festivals anywhere in the world outside the United States and its territories. The application deadline for the second of three grant rounds of the 2014 program is Friday, December 6, 2013 for projects taking place between March 1, 2014 and February 28, 2015. Glass House Collective is working to develop a creative revitalized districts on Glass Street through artist-led and community-involved projects to catalyze redevelopment in East Chattanooga. Announcing a $30,000 grant initiative, Glass House Collective is seeking nationally based artists or artist groups to launch community, place-based projects in this historic neighborhood. The grant will provide three artists or artist teams studio space in the historic buildings along Glass Street and receive up to $30,000 to complete place-based projects in the district.
