Gene Stratton-Porter Marker Dedicated in Rome City

The Gene Stratton-Porter State Historical Marker was dedicated in Rome City on August 17.  The marker dedication was one event in an all-day celebration that included first-person interpretation, a parade, and a Chautauqua festival.

IHB staff want to extend thanks to all the people who visited us at the Indiana State Fair and helped restore the "Old Northside" State Historical Marker.  Many hands make light work, and it was great to meet so many people from around the state who love their history.

The marker was reinstalled at 12th St. and Delaware St. in Indianapolis this week, so stop by and see your handiwork in context!

Successful applications for a State Historical Marker almost always end with installation and a dedication ceremony.  There are some exceptions.

Constitution Day

September 17th is Constitution Day, and the Indiana Supreme Court's Courts in the Classroom program is getting judges and classrooms together to talk about constitutional amendments. 

Preservation Youth Summit

Indiana Landmarks, Indiana Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology and Indiana Freedom Trails invite students in grades 7-12 to participate in the Indiana Preservation Youth Summit.  Selected students travel to southern Indiana October 4-6, 2013, visiting Underground Railroad sites in New Albany, Jeffersonville and Madison while meeting with Underground Railroad experts, community leaders, and tourism and museum staff. Learn more.

Participants selected through a competitive application process receive a full scholarship for transportation, meals, lodging and materials.  Four educators will also receive full scholarships.  Application deadline is September 9.

272-word Essay Challenge

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, Museum and Foundation invites students to submit an essay of no more than 272 words about Abraham Lincoln, the Gettysburg Address or any issue that inspires their passion.

Statehood Day

There is still time to register your 4th grade class to be a part of this year's Statehood Day Celebration on December 11.  IHB will be there with the original State Banner (Flag) designed by Paul Hadley, and other educational activities will fill the State House and three other downtown venues.
