Welcome to the July issue of The Indiana FirstNet Connect, an e-newsletter to share developments related to FirstNet and the deployment of the planned, Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network (NPSBN).

The State Plan is Here!

FirstNet released the much anticipated State Plan on June 19th for review and comment.  Publicly available information may be viewed at www.firstnet.com

We have a multi-prong approach to gather feedback on the State Plan for our Hoosier state.  Our workgroups are hard at work reviewing details while we simultaneously gather input from public safety officials throughout the state in district meetings between June 26 – July 20.  Additionally, we are gathering feedback on your current cellular service providers.  If you haven’t already submitted a response, please take a moment to complete the survey here

We encourage you to attend your local district meeting to learn more about Indiana’s State Plan and to provide critical input on behalf of your community.  Sign-up for an upcoming session here

Thank you for your participation and commitment to evaluating the State Plan for Indiana through our workgroups, meetings and survey.

Sincerely,

David Vice, Indiana Single Point of Contact (SPOC) & IPSC Executive Director

When COWS Fly: Next Generation Airborne Deployables Presented at PSRC

Researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) lab presented future visions for next generation NPSBN airborne deployables at the recent 2017 PSCR Public Safety Stakeholder Meeting.

Imagine a wireless array of Cells on Wings (COWs), covering a huge area—well beyond the footprint of towers typically used today. Such airborne deployables not only provide coverage in “dead zones,” they enable  coverage to move with the incident, such as  during a Search and Rescue (SAR) mission.

The PSCR group displayed a prototype of a miniaturized LTE core network, about the size of a deck of cards. The prototype is packed with technology that you normally only find in an actual cellular tower;  unlike a stationary site, it can be sent anywhere it is needed, enabling a standalone system mode for operations in remote areas.
