The Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL) is pleased to announce that Julie Elmore, Director of the Oakland City Columbia Twp. Public Library of Oakland City, IN has been elected to serve a second term on its board.

ARSL is a national organization of over 800 members whose mission is to provide resources and support that empower those in small and rural libraries to deliver excellent service to their communities.

ARSL works to provide for continuing education opportunities for its members, serves as a source of current information about trends, issues and strategies for rural and small libraries, partners with other library and non-library groups and organizations serving rural and small communities, and advocates for rural and small libraries at the local, state and national levels.

Julie’s second term will begin at ARSL’s annual conference in Little Rock, Arkansas in October.  A complete list of board members and more information about ARSL can be found at www.arsl.info.

ACPL Library Camp

library camp

Allen County Public Library will host ACPL Library Camp on Friday, August 7, 2015.  This annual Un-conference will take place at the main library, located at 900 Library Plaza in Fort Wayne, from 9am to 5pm.  Do you have a great project or idea you are willing to share?  Consider submitting a proposal for a Pecha Kucha talk or a Poster Gallery.  This year’s theme is “Improvisational Innovation: Inspiring a Culture of Creativity at Your Library”.  In classic Un-conference style, participants choose the direction of our program!  Pre-registration is required, and the event is free to attend. Two LEUs will be available for Indiana Public Librarians.  For more information, to register, or to submit a proposal, visit the ACPL Library Camp website by clicking here.

Wendy Phillips Retiring after 35 years of service

Wendy Phillips is retiring June 30 after 35 years with the Carmel Clay Public Library. She became Director in 2000. During her tenure with the library, she held management positions in Circulation, Computer Technology and Technical Services, becoming Assistant Director in 1992. She started her professional career at the Chicago Public Library after receiving her MLS degree from Rosary College (now Dominican University) in River Forest, IL. Among Wendy's many accomplishments, the biggest was her role in moving the Carmel Library to its current location in 1999. The library tripled in size and staff doubled at the time. Wendy said that the best part of her time with the library was the community relationships she was able to build. She will certainly be missed by all!

Carolyn Goolsby has been named the new Director of the Carmel Clay Public Library, starting August 16th. In addition to being an experienced Library Director, she is also a Jeopardy champion and world-record setting weightlifter. You can reach her at cgoolsby@carmel.lib.in.us

Hoosier Newspapers Back to 1812

Hoosier State Chronicles, an NEH-funded project at the ISL, has recently added over 20,000 pages to its online collection of historic Indiana newspapers – bringing the total to 46,000 issues and more than 300,000 pages.  Access is free and available to the public nationwide.

In addition to big-name papers like the Indianapolis Journal and South Bend News-Times, HSC has just digitized runs of smaller historic journals dating back to 1812.  With an eye toward expanding our reach into the mid-20th century, papers now include the historic African-American Evansville Argus from 1938 to 1943 and the Greencastle Daily Banner and Banner Times, spanning the years 1916 to 1974.

Other titles will appeal to researchers digging into the early history of Bloomington, Connersville, Corydon, Lawrenceburg, Logansport, Richmond, Rockville, Salem, and Shelbyville.  Among HSC’s latest batch of newspapers are some of the oldest in the Midwest, including over 1000 issues of the Vincennes Western Sun; Madison’s Western Clarion; and smaller titles from Brookville, New Albany, and Charlestown dating back to early statehood days.

Find a full list of titles at https://newspapers.library.in.gov/

On July 28, 2015, the Aurora Public Library will launch its ‘Talk about Aurora’ series at the newly converted Baltimore & Ohio Train Depot. “In the last few years, the Aurora Public Library has purchased the old Baltimore & Ohio Train Depot and converted this building to house the Aurora history and genealogy collections. For the past eleven years, the depot has held a series called ‘Talk about Aurora’,” said librarian Roy Lambert. “This has been an extraordinary success.”
