Renew your librarian certification by September 30th

Ongoing professional development is your responsibility for renewal of public librarian certification. All classes for LEU credits must be completed between the date your certificate was issued and when it expires. In order to be included in your total, all workshops and classes must have received approval of LEU-eligibility prior to completion.

Professional Assistants must complete 50 LEUs in five years, 10 or more of which must be TLEUs.

Branch/Department Heads must complete 75 LEUs in five years, 10 or more of which must be TLEUs.

Directors must complete 100 LEUs in five years, 10 or more of which must be TLEUs.

Please do not mail your LEU certificates with your application for renewal.

The Indiana State Library will conduct random LEU audits to verify individuals’ participation. If your file is selected for random audit, we will contact you within 30 days after the date your certificate expires (i.e., by 10/31/2015). If you receive a notice of random audit from ISL, you will have 60 days to show proof of your original LEUs. If you do not receive a notice of random audit from ISL within 30 days after the date your certificate expires, you may discard your LEUs from that 5-year cycle.

The cost to renew your 5-year certificate is $50.00.  Through the mail, we accept personal checks and money orders made payable to Indiana State Library.  Per the State Board of Accounts, applicants must use their personal funds to pay for certification; the library may not pay this fee from the operating budget.  A library may choose to pay the applicant’s fee from a gift fund or increase staff salaries in order to cover the cost of the required certificate (totaling no more than $0.20 per week).  The library’s Friends group may also contribute to this cost, if they have the funds and choose to do so.

We will notify INpublib and the Wednesday Word when online renewals with credit card payment are available here.  There is a $4.57 fee for online renewals.
You may renew online ONLY if the following categories apply to you:

1. You have not changed your library employer or your job classification;

2. You are not upgrading your certificate (e.g., from LC3 to LC2 or LC2 to LC1); or

3. You are not applying for a temporary certificate

PLEASE NOTE: YOU WILL USE YOUR CERTIFICATE NUMBER FOR BOTH YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD ON THE INDIANA PROFESSIONAL LICENSING AGENCY WEBSITE.  If you do not know your certificate number, you can search for it here

To upgrade your certificate or report changes in employer or job classification, you must renew through the mail or report them to the Certification Program Director.  There is no additional fee outside the $50 for renewal by paper application.

Download the Application for Certification of Public Librarians and review definitions and criteria on the ISL Continuing Education website

On behalf of our Hoosier library communities, the Indiana State Library sincerely thanks you for your hard work and commitment to continuing your professional learning.  We are hopeful that public library professionals share ISL’s passion for lifelong learning and its potential to enhance services to our communities.  We encourage individuals take pride in their work and in the growth of our profession.

WCPL hosts storyteller Carol Knarr on July 7

Warsaw Community Public Library (WCPL) will host professional story teller, Carol Knarr, who will bring the story of Emma Edmonds alive. Tuesday, July 7th at 6:00 pm.  This event is appropriate for ages 5 through adult.

Free Music Streaming Comes to the Indy Library

Library cardholders can stream music from a free online catalog of more than nine million songs and
28,000 music labels through The Indianapolis Public Library’s web branch at www.indypl.org.

Provided by Freegal, a free and legal downloadable music service, this new capability offers an alternative to such services as Pandora and Spotify and allows patrons to stream up to three hours of ad-free music per day. Individual songs or entire albums from various genres can be streamed, and users can create and customize as many playlists as they like. While music is playing, a timer will keep track of a user’s time limit.

In addition to accessing through the Library’s website, the Freegal app is available for iOS devices on the iTunes App Store and for Android devices on the Google Play Store. Users must sign in to the app with their Library card and PIN numbers.

“This service follows the Library’s new strategic direction in making more resources available for patrons,” stated Michael Perry, IndyPL’s Electronic Resources Librarian. “Adapting our products to meet the demands of today’s tech-savvy users, especially young people, keeps the Library relevant and current as an information resource provider.”

The Freegal service already allows up to five downloads of music per week, which patrons can keep. In addition, music videos can be downloaded. However, each video download counts as two downloads.

In 2014, IndyPL introduced the free streaming of feature films, foreign films, award-winning documentaries, children’s movies and popular TV series through the Library’s web branch. Videos can be checked out for up to seven days, after which they automatically expire.

Beyond books and other physical formats, Library patrons can access an increasing palette of digital resources that include eBooks, e-audiobooks, e-videos, e-magazines, historical digital collections and a large collection of research databases. The Library’s new Strategic Plan calls for continued development of engaging content and new formats that can result in positive user experiences.

The Library’s gateway for Freegal streaming media and other e-media is location at this link.

Earn LEUs by participating in the Bicentennial Summer Institute

Indiana’s Bicentennial Institute will engage educators from each of Indiana’s 92 counties in a professional development field-based institute sponsored by organizations around the state. The purpose of the Institute is to assist educators with adding educational information to the design of a giant county map and timeline of their home counties.  The county maps and timelines will become a legacy resource that provides lasting appreciation of Indiana as your State.

If you would like to earn up to 9 LEUs by participating in this event, please click on this link.

MCLS offers scholarships to Indiana libraries for the Harwood/ALA Public Innovators Lab

The Midwest Collaborative for Library Services is offering up to 20 scholarships to MCLS member libraries in Indiana to send staff to the Harwood/ALA Public Innovators Lab, October 14-16 2015 in Detroit, Michigan.

These funds are being made available through a grant program established by the MCLS Board of Trustees from the proceeds of the sale of the former INCOLSA building.  $50,000 per year for the next five years will be made available on July 1 of each year. MCLS will announce future grant opportunities as funds become available.

The Program
The Harwood Public Innovators Lab is a 2.5 day experience to help you and your organization learn what it means to turn outward – to use the community, not your conference room, as your reference point for choices and action.

MCLS has been using the tools of the Harwood Institute and sharing them with libraries since 2013.  We are excited to be able to support training for a cohort of Indiana librarians.

Funding Eligibility
• Applicants must work in an Indiana library that is an MCLS member.  Non-member libraries may fill out an MCLS membership application to become eligible.
• Applicants may be from any type of library; academic, public, school, institutional or special.
• A maximum of 2 persons per library will be awarded.
• Libraries that are awarded a scholarship for one attendee to the lab will receive $2,000, and those awarded for two attendees will receive $3,500 to cover tuition and partial expenses.  (Tuition for the Public Innovators Lab is $1,495/person and $995 for additional persons from the same institution.  Libraries can expect additional expenses to include travel to Detroit, 3 nights lodging at the Doubletree Hilton at $129/night, meals, parking and incidentals.) Hotel reservations are available now.

Deadlines
• Interested libraries must complete an application form by midnight, July 31, 2015.
• We will send notification and mail a check to scholarship recipients (payable to the Library) by August 14, 2015.
• Recipients will need to register for the Lab by September 10, 2015, and will need to make their own hotel reservations as early as feasible after award notification.

The Application
• A link to the downloadable application is available in MSWord on the Indiana Libraries Harwood Lab Scholarships page.
• Applications should be emailed to Michelle Bradley, Community Engagement Librarian at bradleym@mcls.org.

Questions regarding the scholarship or the Public Innovators Lab for Libraries should be sent to Michelle Bradley, MCLS Community Engagement Librarian, at bradleym@mcls.org, or call her at 800-530-9019 ext. 125.
